Custom beam placement issue

Hello....

I am working on a project which has a number of standard beams with void cut-outs in both side of a beam. Beams would essentially be placed on top of each other like lego. 

Some beam have a full notch taken out whilst some have a void half way through... See attached image.

My issue is that I cannot get these beam placed properly.... See attached image.

The beams are created using the Void Extrusion in family editor with parameters to control the size of void for the beams. I need to get these placed properly, I think I am missing something quite simple not sure what it is.... Please help?
