Converting Solidworks Assembly to Revit

Is there any way to convert a Solidworks Assembly into a file that I can open with Revit? I'm using SW 2012 and the trial version of Revit 2017. I've tried saving the SW model as an ACIS (.sat) file, but Revit wouldn't open it. Any other solutions?

Not familiar with Solidworks, but some tips.

-Export to IFC and then import in Revit.

-Export to a STEP file, import in Autocad, export as 3D DWG and then import into Revit.

-Remodel it in Revit.

Also make sure that your file is not too complex as it complicates importing and can have a negative performance impact on Revit.

Do you your first test with a simple model (e.g a single box) to see if the process works. Later you can do more complex models. Depending on your model you might need to simplify the geometry to be able to import it in Revit.

Your second suggestion- exporting to STEP, importing in Autocad, exporting as DWG then importing into Revit, seems like the best option. The model imported, but will retain all geometry and dimensions?

I have on occasion imported (relative simple) step files before and they  retained geometry and dimensions.

However do some testing to confirm it. Not sure how it would handle more complex models

Hi. Recently I used a product - SolidWorks to Revit Exporter from BIMDeX. It helped me to export my SolidWorks model to Revit with all hierarchy and parameters maintained. You would be able to add any model from solidworks into revit without any additional plugin.

I tend to remodel in Revit. Usually the objects from software like Inventor has too much detail. Also it can not be made parametric. Further foreign file formats tend to have a negative impact on Revit performance.

Both SolidWorks and Revit are actually cross domain softwares. When you take your model to Revit, the design data information necessary for Revit would be lost, It would be just an imported geometry or a dummy model.

You could possibly overcome this with the BXF solution. It is not a foreign file. It is like a file format to exchange your design data and get a native Revit family/ project file

Try using BIMDeX SolidWorks to Revit Exporter plug-in. We used it for our project at university and the results were really good. All parameters and metadata are transferred and RFA files are created for all sldprt and sldasm files. We were also able to add electrical, plumbing and HVAC details to the converted models inside revit because we have the rfa files. we were using a limited version as it was for academic project, but for the full version the options might be more. You might want to check with them.

i know im late on this thread XD 

i contacted bimdex to get an estimate for there both extention ( sldw to rvt and rvt to sldw) and goddam, those are more expensive than the Solidworks and Revit licence combined! 

I'm wondering if some of you know an easier and more cost effective way to do, i'm curently using the DWG 3D metode, but as i have lot of converting from solid to revit and vice versa... i was wondering if there was an easier and faster way to do the task?

So here's what worked for me - 

1. save file as STEP from Solidworks

2. import STEP into AutoCAD (model space)

3. go back to layout/drawing space in AutoCAD

4. click on view port and find the model and bring to/zoom so visible in view port in layout mode

5. save as DWG (not 3d or anything else)

6. import into Revit (I used "create new family file" for "new file" and "generic model" when importing)

7. you will see the CAD imported and it is 3D (this surprised me coming from a DWG)

8. I'm new to Revit so perhaps there are drawbacks but this does work and yields a shaded 3d model

well... that is in now way easyeer or faster than the dwg 3d... XD i was looking for an easy solution that dont cost over 5k to just import and export to native format from sldw to rvt...
