In those cases you have to check the family how it is constructed (or if it is made properly).

In this case it is made poorly. When looking at the family you will see that when changing the elevation the level changes and the light stays stationary.

Of course it should be the other way around.

The solution will be to modify the family so it behaves as it is supposed to be or (down)load a new family or create your own.

seek.autodesk.com can be a source for families. This family is hosted on seek. You could check if one of the versions available behaves correctly or change to a complete different family.

I am unable to place lights in my ceiling. Sofar I am only able to place a light strip on my ceiling plan, and it located about 4' above the floor. I didn't modify the family, but I attempted to place other fixtures on my ceiling plan and am unable to do so. Remedy?

Hi.

Create a ceiling in that view. See attached image for sample settings.

After you create the ceiling, try placing again the recessed lighting fixture. This should solve your problem.

Thanks.
