Cannot get Truss to model as shown in family

I'm completely stumped. I am trying to develop a truss family that has an integrated overbuild. But for some reason,  even though I have it working exactly how I want when in the family editor, the truss will not act correctly once it is inserted. It just will not correctly show the length of the overbuild, and I feel like I've tried everything.

Two things i can think of.

First, trying intersection locking the overbuild chord to the overbuild ref planes.

Second, if that doesn't work, try intersection locking a ref LINE to the overbuild ref planes, then align lock chord to ref line.
