Unable to sync with central model in Revit 2023

Hi everyone,

I ran into an issue with a Revit worksharing model and would really appreciate some advice.

We sometimes need to work on the same project in Revit. Here’s our current workflow: we have one central model, and each of us creates a copy in the same folder, renames it, works on it, and then synchronizes it with the central model. Usually this works fine and we can both synchronize without issues. However, this time I lost an entire week’s worth of work.

This is the first time I’ve encountered this situation. I understand that I may not be able to recover my file at this point. A colleague mentioned that if a model cannot be synchronized with the central file, it must be abandoned and a new copy should be created from the central model, which means redoing all the work. The cost of that is quite high, so I want to make sure I’m handling this correctly.

Could anyone advise on:

  • The correct workflow for collaborating on a central model?

  • Whether there is any way to recover unsynchronized work?

  • Best practices to avoid this issue in the future?

  • Revit version: 2023

Thank you very much for your help.

"we have one central model, and each of us creates a copy in the same folder, renames it"

This is not the correct method.

Once you have saved your central file you close it.

Then each user opens that model BUT with the "Create New Local" box checked - this creates a local copy in the Users designated folder on their own PC, for example:

This is the file that the user edits, saves and synchronises.

You also need to control who is editing what by creating appropriate worksets and having each user "claim" their worksets to make them editable by only them (unless another user places a request to borrow elements for editing).

Thank you very much for your help. I’m trying to find a YouTube video to help me understand this process, as I’m not very comfortable reading texts. If you can suggest any resources, I would really appreciate it.
