Turn off display of an Annotation nested family within Mechanical Equipment

We are using Electric Heat Terminal Units on a project, and I would like to have a special symbol embedded into the Mechanical Equipment family that displays only on Power Plans. However when I import an Annotation Symbol into the Mech Eqpm family, I am not able to put it onto a subcategory so that it can be toggled on and off with the typical 'Model Cateories' view settings.

How can I control the display of an annotation symbol within a Mechanical Equipment family?

can you post the family for review?

in the project, are all engineers using the same model, or are you linking in the mechanical model into the electrical model?

what is the sub-category of the Annotation Symbol, generic annotation symbol or a detail Item?

have you created a parameter that assigns the visibility of the symbol in the mech eqmt family?

in your model for the power plan do you only want to see the symbol or both the symbol and the mechanical extrusion from the family?

i have attached a family that was created as an example of how we use the method you describe

i used a heat exchange family and inserted a generic annotation for an Aquastat

the end result is in plan i only see the symbol

in section or elevation I will see the extrusion

am i understanding your issue correctly?

Hey @kadmonkee

Yes, you're correct, I want the equipment to display in the 'sheet metal' and 'hvac piping' plans, but I want the equipment & the power connection symbol to display in the 'electrical' plans.  I dont see any way of assigning a subcategory to either a Generic Annotation or a Detail Item, and for some unknown reason, Autodesk doesnt allow us to create filled regions in Mechanical Equipment families.  Anyways, I'm attaching problem child for your review. Its Revit 2016 format. Thanks for all your thoughts on the issue!

so i broke your family a bit, I attached the updated version for your review i renamed it to not break your version

(X-FPB_FAN POWERED CONSTANT VOLUME_10-60)

I created a couple of new types

FDC5000 SIZE60(A=16) HVAC BOX

FDC5000 SIZE60(A=16) ELEC BOX

i created 2 new visibilty (yes /No) parameters ELECTRICAL BOX and HVAC BOX

i used a formula to turn off what doesnot belong to the type.

now in the family when i select one the other turns off and so on

the result is not perfect based on my selection and assignments of parameters but maybe this will guide you to the result you are looking for.

only select and assign to the visibility parameter the elements you want to display

anything not assigned a parameter will display in both (in this example) clearance box.

Hi dtiemeyer,

Followed the suggestion from kadmonkee, you can control the nested annotation family visibility by assigning a visibility parameter to it in the mechanical equipment family, then set the visibility parameter as Yes or No for different family types.

Next step: In project, in the view, add a view filter, set it as Mechanical Equipment category, set the filer rule as Type Name equals the specific name, see filtertype.JPG. Then in different plan view, add this filter, and set the filter visibility.

Thanks.
