Tag Shows Question Mark (Tagging Linked Elements)

Hi community,

Really having hard time dealing with Tags showing up as question marks from time to time.

Background:

CSD drawing production. The CSD file itself hosts all tags, having all trade model linked.

Issue:

Some tags shows up as question marks hence suffering progress lost.

Additional info worth mentioning:

1. Been explored on web for a while, the reason "Users have different version of a linked model when working on CSD" has been excluded. Deliberately, before CSD production, we make sure trade models are all set. No model changes, then everyone reloads their linked trade models to ensure the models are the same.

2. We are using BIM360 which we suppose will force downloading the latest set of linked models every time when someone opens the CSD file. Along with point 1, our people usually are using the same set, up-to-date links in the CSD file.

What is the reason behind orphaned tags? Ruling out the reason above and given that the hosts of tags are still there, nobody deletes any of the host elements in trade models.

Any help would be appreciated. Randomly losing progress is painful.

so, if i understand the issue correctly, the tags were filled in at one point with the appropriate parameter information. Then, all of a sudden, one day you open the model and the tags are questions marks instead of parameter information?

  • What are you tagging? (equipment, rooms, louvers, etc....)
    • i'm assuming your tag is pulling Parameter information, vs just the family/type name

Couple things come to mind:

  1. have you TAB Selected the element in the link(s) that are being tagged to make sure the parameter information is still filled out?
    • even thought the model is linked properly, if the parameter in the linked element was deleted/removed, you would get a question mark.
  2. is the parameter you are pulling information from a shared parameter?
    • if you do not have the same shard parameter as a Project Parameter in your model you may get a question mark?

Thx! Great thinking, I would pay more attention to parameters, see if they are intact when next outbreak comes.

We're tagging MEPCurve elements,  pulling System/Service Type + a shared parameter (formatted value of elevation). I took a deeper look on some of orphaned tags. Relationship between tag & host is broken. There's no way I can tick leader checkbox to find out it previous host (grey out). We're sure that none of us deleted any elements in link models. And parameter's setup is correct, also filled with legit value, but I need to investigate it further to see if anyone removed or decoupled it from the MEP categories before.

It feels like tags do not bind to their host at some point, massively.
