Systems not working

hello, today for some reason, my duct system are not carrying from my duct to my fittings. This is very strange since ive never seen it happen before. For example I tried to use the "Cap Ends" button on some ducts and instead of inheriting the same system of the duct they are attaching to, they come in as "Undefined" and therefore show up as gray in my attached picture, shown next to a propertly system assigned endcap that might as well have been from yesterday (in pink). I first noticed this problem today when I was copying groups of ductwork around, by the copy in place, then move method. But the entire system was changed to "Undefined" inside the newly copy groups. Which is strange because Ive never seen that before either, and I do it all the time. But I chauked it up to groups just being groups (ie: weird and difficult) but when it started happening to all of my systems, in groups or not I am starting to worry.  Does anyone have any ideas what the heck is going on?

Hello, Mike,

Thank you for sending the model. I'm posting my reply on the forum so that if anyone else comes across this problem, they'll know what to do.

This problem, where the duct fittings don't inherit the system type of the duct to which they are connected, has indeed been identified as a bug, which has been fixed in Revit 2017. I know you can't upgrade unless the architect is willing to upgrade, but there is a workaround for Revit 2015 and 2016 projects. The workaround is to copy and paste everything from your project into a new blank project.

I came across a very similar problem recently and the solution was purge Groups from the project.

Are you the only one working in the model?  Did a service pack or hotfix get installed lately?  I try not to use groups as we've had nothing but issues with them when it comes to MEP objects.

No hotfix was installed recently that I know about and I am the only one working on the model, which makes this so weird. Unfortunately from the size of the building and the never ending changes, I am forced to use groups.

Watching the video it almost looks to be corruption in the file at this point.  What was odd is that when you trimmed it put all that extra stuff in.  That shouldn't be doing that.

Hello,

Instead of groups, I would suggest you if using linked files, you create a separate file with one level, the link it in the main file and then create one instance for each level.

If each level could be independent from the others your systems will be OK.

Im hesitant to do that because wouldnt that make the systems all the same systems an would make system management impossible? Also, wouldnt that play heck in clash detection?

It didnt put in anything extra, that stuff was locked to the bottom of the ductwork and it jumped when I trimmed it.

@fabiosato,

Hey, how does one go about getting the Autodesk Expert Elite tag in your signature shown here:?

Hello,

Your question about the systems first, I have never done the linked file with HVAC project, but for components schedules they work great and faster than groups. If you need to tag all systems in every floor, then, maybe group can be better, because you are right, they will be the same!

Electrical circuits, when you copy them, groups or selecting all components, all circuits are lost, them you need to redo them one by one, in every floor....

Your second question, in this page http://www.autodesk.com/expert-elite/about you can find information about the Expert Elite Program, you have to apply for and if you are a person that help others to find solutions to problems other users face using Autodesk softwares, them you may get it.

In the site it is better explained.

Thanks for that Expert Elite info!

Now back to the problem at hand. I tried running it on another computer and it still occurs and it also happens with pipe systems as well. The problem doesnt happen with new models or anyother model. Is someone out there willing to take a look at my model "under the hood" for me please? thanks!

Try to remove the entire system, keep or place the endcap and connect a temporary duct (with the new system) to the existing duct and see if this works. Make sure these existing ducts are not grouped together.

The idea is to remove the existing duct systems (all duct connections will become "Undefined") you had and introduce a new one. The new system will now be used for the entire duct systems/connections. You can remove the temporary duct later and reconnect the runs as required but the new system will remain.

Hi, Mike,

This is Judy here, checking to see whether you've been able to solve the problem with the model. If not, sometimes odd "illogical" behavior in Revit can be caused by a full temp folder, and since this started happening recently after the model worked well for some time, this could possibly be the problem.

To empty your temp folder, click the Windows Start button; then type %temp% in the search box. With Revit closed, delete everything in the temp folder (if a few items remain, that's fine). Then empty your trash and see whether that makes a difference in your model.

If that doesn't help, I'll be happy to look at the model to see if I can determine what the issue is. I looked at the video so I'm familiar with what is happening. You can upload the model to Case 12052135 in your Autodesk account; let me know if you need help with this.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon,

Judy Staicer

Is this really the only fix? I have a project with 100's of views on dozens of sheets in it that is under construction and this now started to happen when I needed to show some changes. Not sure starting this one over is really the right option at this point.

I did try these recommendations and I get all kinds of errors and problems. I tried to copy and paste to a new project and after an hour of waiting it just disappears. No nothing in any view or anything. Not even a warning it didn't work. I tried to insert as a group and again after some time I get a failure on some stairs that I can't even delete and it to fails to place the group.
