Suggestions For Slow Open/Sync Times

Ok, I know the check list for this has been poasted a million times. I have also, checked everything on the "typical" check list for a slow model, a million times. The issue I am having is with the linked in models slowing down my opening and sync times. I've run tests on the model. A typical opening time is 22 mins (with all "linked model" worksets on). When I turn off all the "linked model" worksets except 1 or 2, on opening. I get an opening time of around 5 minutes. Significant difference. Obviously, the solution would be to only turn on the "linked model" worksets that a drafter needs, not all of them. The issue is, we actually do need most of the linked in models open at the same time. Buildings attached to buildings, systems attached to systems. Also, we run into people tripping over each other in the model when they sync. Different worksets get turned on and off after syncing. Causing people to turn on and off worksets again. A mess.

Any solutions I may be missing? There does not seem to be a clear, easy solution. We can have up to 5 people in a model at a time. So having people turn on and off worksets just gets messy with syncing.

Thanks.

22 min, that's insane.   I haven't seen anything that bad since something like version 8 or 9, but we don't usually have huge models.

How many GB is the model and linked model?  And what kind of computers do you have?

Are you sure the linked model is on the same version of revit you are using?  Otherwise, it has to upgrade the linked model everytime it opens.  That's the biggest slowdown ive ever seen.

Otherwise, try auditing and compacting both files.   Also try purging the linked model, and checking to see if it has any links that can be removed, or aren't valid.

Agreed. It is insane. The file sizes are not too bad. Our model is 241,000 KB. The largest model that is linked in is 323,000 KB. But, we have 10 models linked in. We also have up to 15-20 DWGs linked in to the model.

We have pretty good computers. We use HP Elitebook Workstations. RAM varies from 16 to 32.

The models are all in the same version of Revit. We don't "clean" the models for linking. The G.C. is in charge of that. But, they make sure we are all on the same page.

I have already audited and purged our models. No big differences. I will do as you suggest. Purge and audit the linked models. As well as remove unnecessary links from linked models. See if this effects anything. If this does help. I will have to have a talk with the G.C. and have them do the same to the models on the server.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will keep you posted.

Dear,

Try to place all the linked models on your desktop, and disconnect the network cable and check opening the model with all linked files, check if this make a good result then probably you have a problem with your server/network. As for the file size it is feasible, we are working on larger than those files. For sure they are heavy but not like you described.

Kindly if this solved your issue, mark as solution to help others.

Ok, so after a week of testing every which way of opening the models. I've come to the conclusion that this may be a server issue. I saved my model and all the linked in models to my harddrive. Then repathed all the linked in models to my working model. Model opened up in like 5 minutes. Also, I saved the model to a new location on the server and did an audit/purge. Did the same to all the linked in models. Then loaded the linked in models one at a time. Loading the model as I added linked in models. Every time I added a new linked in model. The open time increased by 3-6 minutes. Resulting in a typical opening time of 20 minutes when all links were loaded in.

What would your next steps be to clean this issue up? We are not on a "company" server. We are on site and use the company we are contracted with server. Also, could there be another possible issue besides the server that is causing these long load tiimes. It seems pretty clear that the server is causing some, if not all of the problem. It will be hard to get any changes to the server we are using. We may have to considering using our own and using Revit server. Which we don't use currently.

Thanks.

We are MEP company ,also the same issue is raised in our office million times , our models size  is for MEP 1 GB,for Arc+Str 3.5 GB Totally 4-5 GB is soo  big mess for our server. even if for simple opening is taking  30-45 min.

actually at first we supposed, i could come from model quality and we realized this slow  action is not about model content, it is about insufficiency of server speed.  for revit combination we should find better server choice  or we should store all files on the additional separated server. we should use this server for Modelling purpose not for also as DCC.

are there any server specification suggestion for this type problems. my friend is talking about CISCO server management. Could you  share your thoughts?

Hi Ive had the same problem on a few projects now & we found it was 3D toilets (just the disabled ones in one model) in the architects model sound crazy I know but its work for us, so worth a try for you just delete all plumbing fixtures out of your Arch model & see if it helps

Hello,

There is a free plugin that checks family sizes inside the model, knowing which ones are the heavier ones may help.

How did Revit ever allow your models to get that big?  Were you going for a record?

Care to share the name of this free plugin that tells you the size of the families? Is it Family Size Reporter? Or you have something else in mind.
