Splitting Grooved Pipework adds 2 couplings?

Hi, when splitting a grooved pipe to signal where a length ends and another starts, it is adding 2 grooved couplings onto the pipe instead of just splitting the pipe and putting one joint there? It seems to be that it puts one of the extra coupling connectors onto the other coupling and then on either side of each one is the lengths of pipe?

 

Ive checked routing preferences but can't seem to see anything myself that it may be because of?

 

For context, I'm trying to show it in terms of fabrication where the length ends and another is connected via a coupling.

make sure the Coupling family is set in the Union portion of the routing preferences and not the Flange portion.

I can't seem to add it to the union section, there is a version of it specified in the flange section too.

Okay, so ignore this - I've made a duplicate coupling family and changed it from flange to union and assigned it in the routing preferences, but when I split the pipe I still get the same issue.

I'm assuming its because I have a coupling specified as a flange but I think we need that otherwise it doesn't add the coupling to the pipe and a elbow or tee fitting?

that's what I was going to suggest. it sounded like the Coupling was setup as a Flange (vs a Union).

Yeah, it looks like I may need to just have a pipe type with the coupling specified as a union and another with it specified as a flange.

 

Use the union pipe type to draw the mains with pipe splits and then change the terminal piece to the pipe type with the flange routing option and drawing the additional from that.

 

Seems a bit monotonous but it works, thanks for the help!

I would think the join condition (Mechanical Joint, Hub, sleeve, etc...) would be built into the Elbows and Fittings. if not you may need to have the same element categorized as a Fitting and a Union depending on there use. but a Flange will always place 2 "flanges" one on each end of the connecting elements.

I got involved in this myself last week and this was the best solution I could come up with:

  • make the coupling Union instead of the default Flange (which I note that you’ve done)
  • suppress the insertion of flanges in the routing preferences by setting the size range to None.
  • nest the same coupling into your fittings (set as Shared) and place one aligned and locked to each reference plane which hosts a pipe connector
  • set visibility parameters for each individual coupling
  • load into project
  • if you have a situation where you have two fittings directly connected to each other use the visibility parameter to suppress one of the intermediate couplings
  • the couplings will then be the correct quantity

Took an hour or so to set this up for the various fittings that I’m using but it works fine.

(PS, I think the default setup is intended to be used with Victaulic Tools add-on but I don’t have that so this was my workaround instead)

If splitting a grooved pipe inserts two couplings, the first thing I’d check is how the grooved “coupling” is being modeled in routing preferences.

In Revit, a pipe split inserts the fitting from the Union slot in routing preferences. If you’re also using flange/end settings (or modeling couplings via flange logic / nested into fittings), you can end up with duplicated couplings at breaks and at fitting-to-fitting connections.

Suggested checks:

  • Ensure the grooved coupling is assigned only as the Union (not as a flange/end treatment).

  • Verify the coupling family connectors and size table mapping (wrong connector/takeout behavior can cause unexpected extra inserts).

  • If you need couplings “visible everywhere” without duplicates, a common approach is embedding/controlling coupling visibility within the fitting family rather than using flange settings.

MAKHUB’s cut-by-distance workflow inserts one chosen union family at each split and keeps the run connected, which can avoid the “double coupling” behavior when configurations are inconsistent.
