Selecting an assembly vs. selecting the objects in it

Ok, I've been messing around with assemblies for just a few days.  We've run into an issue where in a 3D view, you can only select the components, and not the assembly itself.  The tool to 'create' an assembly isn't there, Assembly system name is in place, but you still can't select the assembly.

Creating a new 3D view, the assembled components work exactly as expected.  First click gets you to the assembly, TAB-Select gets the individual parts.

This HAS to be a toggle somewhere, to select assemblies, or nested components, but i just spent 20 minutes searching here, and another 20 searching the web with no mention of this at all.

This is NOT about selecting parts in an assembly, it's about selecting the assembly when you keep getting parts on click select.  Where is the pick selection to toggle between the assembly and the individual parts?

There is no toggle. I expect you are working with worksets. You might have created objects belonging to a workset in an assembly on a different workset that is not visible/opened in the 3D view. In that case the assembly definition is on a closed/invisible workset while the assembly objects are on the visible/opened workset. This is a situation where your situation occurs

If this is not the solution. To look at this further it can be helpful if you would supply more information so that we can reproduce what you are seeing.

-Revit version?

-Does it happen in all 3D views?

-Does it happen in all projects?

-Example file?

It happened once in 2017 to my boss on the 'default' 3D view from our template file which has no active worksets, and in a 2016 project that's live on A360 running about 350MB.  If I can replicate it again in our template project I'll try to get it posted up.

The 2016 project very well could of been on a different workset, it's one thing I don't recall verifying.

Ok. When it happens look at the possibility that the assembly configuration is 'hidden' while the objects in the assembly are visible.
