Section-Far Clip Offset default

When creating a section, the Far Clip Offset seems to be random. Some times it will include the entire depth of the building, and other times only a few feet. Is there a setting where I can choose the default offset depth? Logically if it were only showing 2', it would be able to create the section view quicker. Any thoughts or help is appreciated!

At the moment I believe that they have to be modified in the properties bar on a instance-basis. There are add-ins that allow you more control when placing the section, but I don't know if there is one that does the criteria you are requesting.

I believe this is worthy of some votes in the Revit Ideas forum. It this could possibly be integrated into one of two different places;

  1. in the section type properties, or project settings/additional settings
  2. the section/elevation templates. Not as a lockable parameter though, just as a default starting point

Do you know why it would disappear altogether? I need to change mine but it is not showing up. I need to change the highlighted figure to something like 2-3'.far clip.PNG

Building and Wall Section types behave differently than Detail Sections. Also the length of the cut of the section (section line length) influences how deep the Far Clip Offset (FCO) is at first, as well as the extent of the model.

For example, sketch a Building Section that is 5', 10' and 20' wide. If the section does not cut a model element the FCO will likely be the same for each of them. If it cuts through a wall, for example, the FCO will extend to different values, and the wider section(s) will likely extend to cover the entire length of the wall, depending upon how long the wall is and where the section cut is placed.

If you sketch a Detail Section, in the same way, that is 5', 10' and 20' wide you'll find the FCO is also 5', 10' and 20'.

At times I'll sketch a Detail Section type because I know it will produce a smaller FCO and then change it to the other type; Building or Wall. If I forget to do that then I just edit the value in the Properties Palette instead of zooming out to drag the grip back closer.

A View Template is assigned (in charge of the view), to change that you'll have to edit the view template to either use a different value or disable its influence on that property.

Thank you, that is a lot of information I did not realize that was happening. In this case the sections are already drawn so I need to just pull the grip back but it is not visible. Do you know how to make it visible so I can move it?

I am still unsure which one to uncheck:

Nevermind! I see it. Far Clipping.

So the answer is... for future readers:

If the far clip has disappeared AND you have a view template applied - make sure under V/G that you have selected CLIP WITH LINE selected as shown below.

If you do not have a view template applied, you can edit that in the properties under extents - far clipping.

My first reply was because of the original post, my second was more on point for your question. Glad you're on the right track now.
