Rotate electric motor

I need to rotate this electric motor, so the electrical connector is upwards. I need to rotate it 180 degrees along the rotation axle. I would like to know how to remove the limitation.

Hello,

 

Have you tried to uncheck the always vertical option?

Yes, I've modified the RFA family, saved with a different name and loaded into project. But the message still appears:

 

"Can't rotate element into this position.

 

Please try personally the procedure before giving further advice.

Hello,

 

Using workplanes hosting is ok?

If not you will need to create your own family.

I don't want to create new working planes, because I'll place several of them and will fill my project with unnecessary data. The motors will be attached to a suspended structure. I would like to be able to edit the original RFA family to remove the restriction so I can place it on any xyz coordinate with any degree of rotation around any axis (the same I can do with a generic plumbing pipe). What I ask is for help about how to remove that restriction and save as a new family.

Which Revit version do you need the family? I can do it from 2014

Hello,

 

I changed the motor, you can open up and check, the reference lines and the motor geometry reference planes are very important, and using a proper sequence make it easier to predict the behavior.

First, make the original family workplane based, uncheck always vertical, save as nest motor.

Open the original family and remove all reference planes and geometry, you will have an empty family, just keep the parameters.

First, in front view create the X angle reference line, that has as workplane center(front/back) reference line, place the angle dimension and link to the angle x parameter.

Second, in right view, set the new reference line as active workplane, select the one that is not orthogonal to the view, create a reference line and place an angle dimension and link to the angle y parameter.

Third, go to the plan view, select the workplane that corrensponds to the end of the second reference line, this plane crosses the origin.

Insert the nest motor family in your family, place it choosing workplane option, place it in the origin, in my case the motor came upside down, select the family and click on the icon that mirrors it.

I created a family type parameter to be able to change the nested family type according to the host family type.

Try to change the angles, you may need to align and lock to the second reference line, then flex the family, in my case it indicates some error and remove a constraint, I flexed the family and it seems to be ok.

I believe it will fit your need!

Sorry for the untested reply, sometimes I give guess tips, that works in some situations, because I have no time to test.

This solution took an hour to finish. Thank you for your comprehension.

Hello, I made some further testing in project enviroment this morning, when Angle X is 90 degrees the geometry changes position and the motor becomes upside down, angle Y is OK. If you don't mind to adjust the motor position when it is 90 degrees in the X axis you can use it!

I forgot to say that you can use positive and negative values for angles, if you don't mind instead of 90 degrees you can use 89.5 or something close.
