Room not enclosed

Hello,

I am using Revit to run an Energy calculation and I need to link the architectural IFC file in order to create rooms and spaces afterwards.

I have an issue because when I am on the floor plan view and I try to create rooms (manually or automatically) most of them are not in enclosed space.

I have read lots of forums and I cannot find the solution for this problem. I have checked the computational height, the View range of the floor plan, ticked 'room bounding' on the link constraints and on the single walls as well..no joy. 

I think that the problem is the way how the file has been exported in IFC and then imported in Revit.

Does anyone ever had the same issue and found a solution? Thanks.

Rather than linking the IFC, open it in another session.

This gives you a couple of options:

1. You can check that the walls in the IFC are in fact WALLS (they may come in as Generic in which case you will need to check your IFC import settings)
2. Then save the file as an rvt

Link the previously saved rvt, and then:

1. copy / monitor Levels
2. Edit the link to make it room bounding

For your analysis, I'd recommend creating Spaces rather than rooms. 

You could also take a look at one of my previous AU papers: MP1483: Massing and Using Architectural Models for Autodesk® Revit® MEP 2013 Analysis. It is for 2013, but the workflows are still valid for MEP.

Hello Simon,

Sorry for the late reply but I just had a chance to jump back on my Revit test.

Can I ask you how can ?I actually check which type of walls have been modelled in the IFC file? As you can see on my screenshot (attached) they look with no family set.

Hi Claudia,  I've ran into this problem when the architect does not properly enclose their rooms.  You will either need to go into the architectural model and add "room separators" (Architecture tab ->Room&Area ->Room Separator)  in order to close the architectural room so that you can add spaces to it.  

Or you can add "Space separators" from the analyze tab.

I really hope I can find a better solution otherwise could be a huge issue in case of big and complex buildings!
