Revit project will not open, error "This family instance has too many edges.

When trying to open a Revit project this morning, I was faced with this error.  "This family instance has too many edges.  Remove unnecessary geometry or split the instance into multiple instances."  At this point, I get a window simply saying "load canceled".  I have tried to audit, detach from central, recover and nothing will open the file.  Has anyone had this problem and hopefully know how to open this stubborn file.

If there are any linked files such as autocad or other revit files in the problematic file, then open/audit/purge the link files first.....then try opening the problematic host file.

Open detached, preserve worksets, and specify worksets. Turn off all worksets. This should at least let you into the file.

After you're in the file, you can try to start opening worksets one a time to see which workset the culprit is in. That may narrow it down, at least.

After that, you'll have to delete families one at a time from the project browser until the workset will load. Start with new or unfamiliar families. I would purge first. That will tell you which particular family is the culprit.

After you know precisely which family is causing the problem, you can close without saving, then open your central model with all worksets off and delete the one bad family or try to open it to see what the problem is.

Drafting is a breeze and Revit doesn't always work the way you think it should.
