Revit does not auto select the proper fitting for Bends (45 vs 90) and for Branches (Combo vs wye)

Hi,

 

i am using Charlotte pipe fittings for waste pipe.  I have downloaded their fitting families from their website.

 

I am having an issue with how Revit decides on which fitting it chooses to do an auto route.

1 - In Bends, it chooses a Quarter Bend (90 degrees) and places it in my 45 degrees run, instead of choosing the Eighth Bend (45 degrees).

2- In Branches, if i add a branch to main run coming in  at 45 degrees angle , it uses (tries to use) a combo (90 degrees) instead of a wye (45 degrees). 

 

Currently i am going around it by fiddling around with the routing preferences, but i must be missing something so i can have revit does the selection for me.

 

any ideas?

For some fittings what you are suggesting could work automatically but, particularly in drainage design, there are aspects which can never be automated and require the designer to decide which fitting they want e.g. for a 110mm/4" branch you might want a plain "90" degree branch, or a 3-boss branch, or a 5-boss branch, or a rear access branch, or a 45 branch plus 45 bend etc.

Even with bends you might have a plain "90" degree bend, one with rear access, one with a small bore boss, or a larger radius bend at the base of the stack, maybe a duckfoot bend etc.

There's no way that Revit can automatically assume which option you would want so, unfortunately, you have to keep promoting/demoting the fittings in your routing preferences or swapping fittings individually after placement

Just my thoughts on the matter.

Absolutely. It's not going to be possible (I mean, it is, but this is Autodesk were talking about) to get Revit to pick the perfect fitting in every case. But I think we can all agree that there is a lot of room for improvement here. Currently Revit just gives you an error when making an angle/connection that the top fitting isn't compatible with. This completely interrupts the workflow and requires you to stop and change setting before each different intersection.

 

I would say as a bare minimum Revit should be trying the other fittings in the list in an attempt to at least complete the circuit without interruption. It's easy enough to go back after and change a few fittings to different ones. But it would be nice if the fittings it did use were real world parts that could be scheduled instead of just one magical fitting that conforms to every possible angle being used for everything. But that requires more rules in the list, such as angles and branches instead of just pipe diameter. And, you know, trying more than the just the first option in the list lol.

Hello,

 

Families that allow minimum angle variations depend on how the family was created, not how Revit works.

Also, in the routing settings, changing fitting type according to the size range is possible.

So far, this is the possibilities we have.
