pipe connection to mechanical equipment with flange / transition

Hi all,

I have a problem with the automatic adding of the correct fittings in the correct places.

Number 1 works like it should be:

Connecting a pipe to a ME works good

Drawing pipe from ME works good

Sometimes the ME has a different connection size than needed and the pipe then downsizes, this is visible in number 2, but this doens't work like how I want it to work. It has to be like number 5 instead of like number 2.

Number 3, is how fittings are positioned

Number 4 is how fittings are suppose to be positioned

Number 5 is how it has to supposed to be.

At first I was doing it with one nested family, so the transitions inside the flange famlily, but when change the size of the pipe, then the flang was deleted and a transition was added without the flange.

Any clues?

Hello,

If the pipe size value of the fitting connector differs from the connected pipe, Revit will automatically create a transition type fitting to adjust the different values.

Hello,

That I understand.
But Revit first creates the transition at the mechanical equipment and then between the pipe and the transition the flange (picture 3)
I need the flange at the mechanical equipment and then between the flange and the pipe the transition (picture 4)

You could nest the flange family inside the Mechanical Equipment family and associate the size of the flange to whatever parameter is driving the Mechanical Equipment connection size.  If this is for scheduling purposes you will need to make sure the flange family is "Shared", however you will still need to use a connector from the host ME family environment (perhaps placed on the flange geometry).

Hello,

Revit will only place flanges on the end of pipe segments. If you need flanges on pipe fittings, accessories, plumbing fixtures, or mechanical equipment, you must include them in those families.

This is a situation I am running into the shortcomings of Revit.

The ME sometimes has to connect to a pipe with a flang, but not always. Sometimes it connected to a pipe with not a flange, but with a valve between. And sometimes it has to connect to the pipe with a flange, but then in the flange a transition to a smaller size.

So I think I am gonna build the flange inside the ME family, and set them visible or not with a Y/N parameter, the connector size also depends on the Y/N, so I will set the connector with a formula.

When flange is visible, then a smaller pipe can connect to the ME and will put a transistion between the pipe and the flange, when flange is not visible, then a valve can connect to the ME.

Do you REVIT-experts think this is a good way to go further with or do you think this also will give problems?

Hello,

It seems to me the best solution.

I suggest you create an extrusion to host the connector. The position will also change depending on whether you have a flange or not.

Thank you for your reply!

About the extrusion.... I use ref-planes with parametric dimensions to get all items on the place they need to be. That works great for me 😉

Hello y_malviya,

If I had the file I would send it, but this was at my former job, I don't have it anymore.
