Open Mesh Flooring

Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening

I am trying to create a flooring family for MS Open Mesh Flooring. However I am struggling to be able to create it as a flooring family.

Does anyone have a family that they are prepared to share, or could someone point me in the right direction in creating one?

First, floors are system families, so are not a loadable families and can only be created by duplicating the types in the project and modify the parameters (or transferring from other project).

So what are you trying to accomplish exactly? If you would create some kind of loadable family with all the meshes modeled you can expect to kill Revit performance wise. Most common solution would be to create a material to indicate the grating. Then you can use detail drawings to give more details about the mesh grating (e.g dimensions, pattern)

do you mean floor Grates?

We do a lot of Process and Storm Water Management...

in our office:

  • duplicate an existing floor
  • edit the structure to be 1" thick
  • set the surface pattern to a fill pattern to match the grating
    • you many need to make a custom fill pattern
  • set the floor transparency to 100 (or whatever looks good for your needs)
  • place a floor where you want the grating and assign it that floor type.

This is where I'm at with the family. Which lead me to the next problem, we have a number of clients and templates across the globe.

What I now need to be able to do is create the Flooring System (Open Mesh Flooring), which can be saved as a family or a file which can be imported in the projects. We use a component portal as the host to download families into revit and would like to be able to the same.

I initially thought that I could create a family with all the flooring types within, but avail this is not available. Any clue?

Floors are a system family. So not a loadable family. You could make it part of your template(s). Otherwise stick it in a project and they can copy it to their own project(s) by using transfer project standards.

Hi and thanks for your response.

I work for a global consultancy, and the role which myself and my team do is the creation of intelligent 4D, 5D components and families. With this being global each region/office will have their own templates, so being able to update their templates is a little problematic.

What we have is a cloud based portal where the users can search and download components and families direct into the models. Not just for Revit, but other vertical products.

Hence the reason that I am looking to find a solution, where we can load the Flooring Family to our cloud storage for the users to download. I was hoping that someone has managed to rectify the problem

Why not load a project to the cloud since you can't place the system family directly there?

Drafting is a breeze and Revit doesn't always work the way you think it should.

I had considered this, but the plugin places the components. Unfortunately it doesn’t read the families from the project to import.

Not yet anyway.

Hello,

One suggestion:

1 - create a piece o floor.

2 - select it and create a group.

3 - in the project browser, right click on the new group and select save as group, it will save and RVT file which contains the group.

4 - in the new file, use load as a group and select the previous RVT file, then you will get the floor family inside your file, you can delete the group after the operation.
