Losing legend symbols when updating Revit template from 2017 to 2018

I am in the process of updating our Revit 2017 template to Revit 2018 but when I do we get the following error. If i then delete the elements, it deletes all of our symbols from the legends. Does this have a workaround? Their must be a better way for updating several templates at once opposed to having to make the change to several files repeatedly.

I typically use the 2d drafting symbols for all my Legend views.

I set them up in a drafting view then copy them into my Legend view for use in multiple views as needed.

this provides a smaller legend, and those symbols can be used in the project as detail items.

there may be an issue with the updating of 3d families going from 2017 -2018
