How to create a plan view in a family ?

I would like to make / change some families such that they have two representations : a symbolic representation (e.g. for floor plans or in coarse detail) and a 3D geometry (e.g. for 3D views).

One required step seems to create a floor plan (or a similar) view where one can draw or import the 2D symbol. How can one do that ? The procedure described in the help under ‘Create a Plan view’ doesn’t work, for the Plan Views drop-down is missing.

There should be a floor plan view already in there called "Ref. Level".

Drafting is a breeze and Revit doesn't always work the way you think it should.

Hello @Angayo,

In the family editor are already Views available.

Just right click on one and create a duplicate like you would do in a project.

Then rename it.

I Think that is what you want to know. Smiley Happy

Hi @Angayo

Hope you are well!  Smiley Happy

If I understood your question correctly, you are after the following:

  • Where to change the Visibility/Graphics Overrides to display in some detail levels and not in others.
  • To add a Symbolic Annotation (2D) to a Family with the same overrides as mentioned above.
  • Where to find a Plan View to create the Annotation. (Ref. Level)

Here is a video which takes you through the process and I also added the Annotation which I used in the Video.

Default Electrical Annotations can be found under: Libraries >> US Imperial/Metric >> Annotations >> Electrical

You can simply edit the Annotations as you desire, insert it as per the video and load the family into your project. I think I covered everything in the video.

I hope this helps! Smiley Happy

Thank you for your replies.

Based on some example families, I thought that I needed a dedicated plan view for symbolic representation and was under the impression that the symbolic plan view was of different a kind than the default one. I tested that the former is indeed not required andif I understand correctly, the latter is not the case.

Why does the family editor lack the ‘Create a Plan view’ button, or, why does the Revit help not describe how to do it ?

All the view types are set up already, except for sections which are the only views you can create from the ribbon.

If you need more than the default six that come pre-made for you, you can duplicate the pre-made ones.
