Hosting issue

See the image below.

When I place the receptacles (on the left) they will host to the wall even if they are close together. If they are too close, then a receptacle might host to another one, but all three of the ones shown do not.

When I place my fire alarm pull stations, if they are close at all, the second one will host to the first one. So after I placed the first one (with the green 1st), I placed the second one (green 2nd) and it is hosted to the first one. The third pull station is hosted to the wall.

The issue is that in the same family as the pull station I have my horn / storbes which sometimes will need to be next to the pull station, but I want the horn / strobe hosted to the wall. The architect moves the door - I move the pull station and the horn / strobe moves too even though I don't want it to.

I know there is probably a simple answer as to why, but it is driving me crazy.

Most likely your families are face-based so the second family is probably hosting to a face in the first family. When you are placing them you should, I think, be able to hover over the placement point and tab to cycle through host options?
Or place the family further along the wall so that it finds the wall face and then slide it along the face or use the align tool - but it should retain the the wall as the host.

I figured it out.

Someone put a symbolic line 50' in front of the device in a view I wasn't looking at. For some reason, even though the line is symbolic, Revit wants to host to that device instead of the wall.

Offsetting the annotation doesn't work because then the device isn't in the right place in the model.

The whole point of that is that in 2D plans the symbols don’t overlap each other but the 3D family is in the correct place in the model - its fairly standard practice for tidying up plan views - I wasn’t suggesting it instead of sorting the hosting but as an additional feature that you might consider.

Unfortunately, if you use Face based families, this can happen.

To solve this:

Select your family, and look in the properties if it is hosted to another family or to the Wall you placed it on.

If it is hosted to a family, (1) select the family and select ‘Edit Work Plane’ (2), In the dialog box select ‘Pick a plane’. Then select the Wall where it belongs to. Not too close to the other families but a bit far from your families.

Check if the host is now the Wall.

You will see that you can move the other family without moving yours.

That is why I always use Level based families instead of face-based ones. 😉

I believe the problem is, when you are trying to place your hosted family on the wall you are hovering on the other family so as the family is face-based it will be attracted to the first face. I recommend working on a smaller scale so the 2D symbols(generic annotation) will be smaller on the screen so you can place the new element without interfering with the existing . Please place somehow far from the old and move closer.

Also, I recommend placing on the 3D view or make a different view per trade so this will avoid this interfere.
