Are the routing preferences for your cable tray family set? If so, then maybe the family required isnt loaded into the project?

Normally, to connect align connection in duct and pipe, they can be done very easily, by align and drag. However, for cable tray is not that flexible. You need more steps to achieve, then you can connect do align connection. To have aligned connection based on your screenshot and assume you draw from left to right(Direction is important!!!), you have to set both tray horizontal justification to left otherwise, both sides different justification, then you can connect them in this way.

As for the error explanation, I believe that revit are intended to make a 2 bends and 1 straight tray, since default fitting have extra length of 300mm plus long 300mm radius bend, and the 1 straight tray is minus length, that why it create these error.
