Help creating an exterior offset in window family

Not applicable

Hello,

I am having troubles creating an exterior offset parameter for a window family. I would like to be able to enter in a 'Projection from Wall' distance that would change how far my window comes out of the wall. When I try to label a dimension as the exoffset I get an error message saying "Labeling this dimension would overconstrain the sketch."  If anyone has experience with this or insight to this problem that would be greatly appreciated!

can you share the family?

it seems like you need to add a reference plane and align and lock components to it then add the dimensional parameter to allow the offset to be set by the user (instance parameter ) or (Global Parameter)

If there is any information shared that is of value please give Kudos

The error message already tells you what the issue is. It tells you that adding another constraint will overconstrain the sketch.

So something else is already constraining that particular element (with id 152924).

As an example

Hereunder I have a box it has a dimension that I have locked (the one with the arrow pointing to it). So the box position in horizontal plain is constrained

When I add another dimension and I try to add a parameter to it I get this error.

Consider uploading the family so we can have a look.

In your case the biggest problem is with the sweep.

Sweep.png

The path of the sweep is on the exterior plane. You then constrain the sweep to the "front window" plane. So the object is now constrained between the front window plane and the exterior plane

When you add a dimension you basically try to pull the profile away from the sweep path which Revit does not like.

The solution is easy instead of putting the sweep path on the exterior plane put it on the front window plane (and reposition) the profile.

When completed and you now try to move the window front plane it will allow to do so because the sweep is not constrained to the exterior plane anymore.

Can you walk me through the steps you took to do this? I'm not sure which reference lines to select. Also, do I have to unlock anything?

See screencast below.  I think it explains itself but if you have any questions feel free to ask.
