Editing Multiple View Templates

Does anyone know of a tool, add-on or Dynamo script that allows you to edit multiple view templates at the same time?

As a BIM manager, I'm constantly in the view templates, and we have a lot. If you want to apply a filter, or turn a category off, or muck with the arch link in the MEP model, it requires you to repeat the same tasks over and over for each individual view template. It's incredibly time consuming.

Has anyone come across a better means of editing multiple templates at the same time?

GeminiBIM has just released a Revit plug-in that will allow you to modify multiple view templates and gives you the ability to add filters to multiple view templates.

Also, full transparency, I am one of the owners/ developers.

I'll be checking this out. Actually looking forward to it. Thanks!

Drafting is a breeze and Revit doesn't always work the way you think it should.

That's awesome!

Does it allow you to affect other aspects of view templates (besides filters) as well?

Example: Turning on/off a workset in multiple view templates. Affecting the level of detail in multiple view templates. Changing the scale of multiple view templates. Turning on/off model/annotative categories in view templates?

If it did, it would be a silver bullet and I'd sing its praises from the rooftops!

@JesseMayes - I am also one of the partners/developers for  GeminiBIM. Yes, the app provides the ability to control all parameters that can traditionally be controlled via a view template.

The Template Transfer command on the GeminiBIM Tools app allows you make a change only once to one of your existing view templates then propagate those settings to any other view templates within your model.

For example you could make VG overrides to your Revit Links of a view template then copy those VG overrides to any or all other view templates, thus ensuring all templates share the same Revit Link overrides.

See this video that demonstrates the Transfer Template command in action.

This looks like an awesome tool. However, I tried installing it in my 2021 version and it doesn't show up. Is there a separate download for 2021?

@JesseMayes - Than you for expressing interest in GeminiBIM Tools. There is only one installer for Revit versions 2020-2023.

Are you able to confirm that the app was successful purchased and downloaded from the Autodesk App Store from the below link?

If yes, can you confirm if the app is available in another Revit version?

If you don't use the app or some better method..... I condensed number of templates and that also helps when I make changes. For example for mechanical vies I had separate templates for floor, ceiling, 3D, section. Since what I show and how is the same for all M-vies, I just use the floor template for all types of M-views. So whenever I get a great new idea, i only edit that one template instead of 4 templates.

Revit Version: R2026.2
Hardware: i9 14900K, 64GB, Nvidia RTX 2000 Ada 16GB
Add-ins: ElumTools; Ripple-HVAC; ElectroBIM; Qbitec

Unfortunately, there is no built-in feature in Revit that allows you to edit multiple view templates simultaneously. However, there are a few options you can explore to streamline the process:

  1. Dynamo Script: You can use Dynamo to automate the process of editing multiple view templates. A script can be written to modify the properties of multiple view templates in one go. You can find many useful scripts for view template management on the Dynamo website or online forums.

  2. BIM Manager Tools: There are several BIM manager tools available that can help you manage and modify view templates in Revit. Some popular tools include Ideate BIMLink, Autodesk BIM 360 Design, and Synchro Software.

  3. Revit API: If you are familiar with programming, you can use the Revit API to write a custom program that can modify multiple view templates. This may require more technical expertise and time investment, but it gives you full control over the customization of your view templates.

Overall, these options can help you save time and improve the efficiency of your view template management process. However, it is important to note that these solutions may require some time to learn and set up, but they can be very helpful in the long run.

I used GeminiBIM plugin and it did allow me to create a filter and disseminate it accross all of my templates. However, I was really hoping to be able to make changes in the VG of the categories and copy just those and paste them to other view templates. Either the add-in does not support that, or I just did not give it enough attention to dig deeper.
