Do I need to learn Revit Arch/Structure before learning MEP

I just got a new job, and I need to start learning Revit/BIM for use in plumbing and fire suppression for larger projects in California. Anyway no one here in the office knows Revit at all, and I am  responsible to plan out my training. I only have a basic knowledge of Revit from my Associates, and need to start fresh with it. Anyway I didn't know if I needed to learn Revit Arch/Structure first before learning MEP. Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Hello,

You don’t know how to model an Architectural model or a construction model but it is important to understand the basics of these models. How they are made what Revit Categories they use.

In our Revit training sessions, we learn the MEP trainees in the first two days how to model a simple building, look at architectural en construction models to under how architects and construction companies make those models you are going to use. Most of the time you use them as linked models.

But most important is that you understand what the basic Revit principle are.

  • Get familiar with the Revit User interface
  • Understand Revit Categories and Sub Categories
  • Understanding how you can work with linked files (Revit, DWG, IFC)
  • Know what Type of Views there are and how View templates work
  • Understand how Revit families in basic work and learn about parameters in these families
  • How to create Sheets etc.

After that you can go into deep with the MEP functionalities in Revit.

So it is very important that you get used to the basic principles of Revit without becoming an Architect or a Construction engineer.

There are a lot of good videos online where you can learn the basics of Revit but look also at

http://au.autodesk.com/au-online/overview

Once you know Revit you won’t go back.

Have fun with Revit and enjoy.
