Default family parameters.

Good day.

Is there a way for me to edit or change default family parameters(inside a face based family template) like for instance:

  • The “Default Elevation” parameter.
  • “Elevation” This is entirely invisible in the Family but when loaded into the project it appears.

Both are under the Constraints sub in the Properties menu.

How can I get rid of them? Or hide them in the properties rollout?

The "Default Elevation" resides within such a Family, and it defines the initial Elevation value that the elements' will have when placed in the Project. Once an element is placed in a Project, the "Default Elevation" Parameter from the Family is no longer in consideration. There is no direct link or connection between the values of these Parameters. There is no way to get rid of one or the other, nor edit either one.

If you are placing an element in a Project, you can (before you actually click to place it) enter a new value for "Elevation" under Properties, which will temporarily establish a new "Default Elevation" in the Project. Using the "Create Similar" command will restore the initial "Default Elevation" as the Project's default "Elevation" value.

I assumed as much so I have a report parameter in my properties rollout doing nothing confusing people….

Is there a way for me to add one in my family ie: referencing into the current level while being a wall hosted element?

I need something that can indicate a builder’s work penetration onto a linked model to make it easy for the low end of the spectrum Revit users to use.

Unfortunately, these parameters are untouchable. Furthermore, one cannot create any kind of intelligent or reporting parameters that are capable mimicking this behavior.

In fact, Elevation is not even accessible to Tags, which I find ridiculous. One of my very early posts in these forums detailed my work-around to combat this limitation by using a Spot Elevation Tag: Tagging Wall Device Elevations

I find it hilarious that four years later (Granted all of my firms content is being created in R17), that I have been running into this issue and have actually used your workaround a few times already concerning tagging elevations. It is my understanding that in newer versions there is more capability for utilizing elevations with parameters but I just felt like adding my two cents about the default elevation parameter in a face based family, I would suppose it is there for creating families that would never move vertically & be set at that exact height but then why let you adjust elevation from host/level/floor when placed in a project..? But the worst part is that that after placing it in a project they do not relate to each other, i.e. setting a default elevation to 4' in the family but when loaded into a project the "Elevation from..." will say 0. Maybe they changed it in a newer version hopefully

Yes you can... open that family in the family editor and customize away!
