create new annotation symbol template?

hi! I need to figure out how to create a new annotation symbol template OR find another solution to my dilemma. I am going to be making a bunch of annotation symbols to put into my drafting views as connectors etc. they all have the same basic size- 1/4" by 1/8". So far, I've used the generic annotation symbol template which works great, but i have to add a bunch of the same reference lines every time. I want to be able to use the generic annotation template as the base, then add all my reference lines, etc, and save it as a template that I can then make my annotation symbols in without having to re-add the reference lines every time. When I go to "save as", the "save as template" option is greyed out. Is it possible to do this? If not, does anyone have any advice? thanks so much!

Why don’t you save the basic family with the reference lines and common elements, then use that family as the starting point for other families rather than starting from the template each time?
