Hello, fairly new to the Revit/AutoCAD world.
I am currently trying to find a way where I could take a piece of electrical equipment (a panelboard for example), and find a way to copy/paste only the lines that make up the 2D figure. I don't need/want any of the electrical properties/data to be copied over with this, I just would like a away to copy the lines; as detail lines so i could copy and paste on anything from floor plans to sheets themselves. I've tried looking into this, and have not found a solution so I figure I would post here for the first time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I'm not sure you're really thinking 'in Revit' with your request, so I don't recommend what I'm about to suggest - but you should look into creating an annotation symbol family and using that. It will scale nicely across scale factors. The downside is it will be view specific, so if you put it on the site plan adjacent to the building, it would not show up on the building floor plans.
You could create a Generic family with just the line work and place that. It won't have geometry, but will still be something that you can count and add parameter information to so you can schedule/tag.
But I'm not sure what you are trying to do. In my experience drawing "lines" to show something in Revit is never a good idea. If something changes or moves the lines are still there. Plus you can add any information to lines.
Why isn't linework geometry? Please explain as this is new to me.
I meant for example using Detail Lines to draw in a panel (or anything) instead of using a Revit family.
Were you trying to answer my question?
Yes, but I re-read what I wrote so I can see how it doesn't really answer your question.
When I said geometry I meant a 3D object, which I worded incorrectly.

This sounds like a great way to NOT use the program for what it is. But I will bite:
- open the family plan view and export it to DWG
- create a new Detail family and import the DWG in
- load the Detail family in your project and use it on plans
