Copy room tags between models - Links have same name.

Something happened in our MEP model and we lost all our room tags. We're still trying to find out what happened there. 

We were able to download an older version from BIM360 that still had the room tags. We thought we'd be able to copy the room tags from the backup model back to the current one. But when we try pasting we get two warnings.

The first is the "overlayed - invisible links" warning that I've only seen when linking in a new models. This seems like an odd warning when pasting room tags. And to be sure, we did only copy room tags to the clipboard.

And then we get this message: "Can't complete operation. Links have the same name." We can actually see the room tags on the screen, but we have no option except "Cancel".

Any ideas?

Can you not just re-tag them all? Select all rooms then use tag all?

That's what we're resorting to at this point. Bummer is that tag all places them at the default location which isn't always the best place in the view. We often adjust the tags' locations for better legibility.

Okay so if the problem is that the links have the same name, can you copy the link, rename it, reload from… in the older file, copy tags to the newer file. Will that work if the links have different names?

Is there any any solution for this issue. we are currently facing it. We are not able to copy the Room tags from our backup file to Live model.

Late to the game, but....
We have found that when copying Room Tags from one model to another it copies the actual Revit Link along with the tags.  If you go into Manage links and remove the link that is copied in you will no longer get this error. 

FYI, every time you copy the tags, the link will be inserted into the current model again, so you will need to remove it, again!
