Change host without moving

I've got several elements hosted to a level that I would like to remove. The thing is that when I select an object and click on Pick new host, the position is not preserved. Tried even using the Pin tool but doesn't work, when I move the mouse over the new level the object still moves from its original position. How can I reasign hosts without moving the object from xyz position?

What you are asking seems a little bit strange. You want to move your object to a new host without moving the object?

If you have a hosted family it stays relative to the same plane as the host. So the origin point of the family is on the same plane as the host.

You wil see that the object can move on that plane but can not be moved away from it. When you do a pick host and select another object that occupies another plane than your family will move to that plane (as it should be).

If you want  to move your object from level 1 to level with the same xy coordinates (normally different z) then you could use cut, then paste aligned to selected level or something similar.

Yes, I needed to change from one level to another. "Paste -> Aligned to Selected Levels" worked preserving the same x and y coordinates, however the Elevation (z) wasn't preserved. Basically you need to put the new elevation to sum of the old elevation plus the difference between levels

New elevation = Old elevation + Old level elevation - New level elevation.

It can be a positive or negative result, and some objects even don't support elevation (stays grayed at 0).

It worked, but still requires a little bit of calculation. Hope newer versions of Revit include improved copy / paste methods.

I have the same Issue. I have received from a MEP Consultant their RVT file with their levels messed up, but the 3d model is coordinated. So i was thinking that I can reassign the elements that are hosted to a wrong level to the main floor (maintaining the z position) and then once I have placed the level in the right place I can reassign it so the schedules works well, etc.

The idea is not to move it manually beacause if i do that all the connection will break.

Could somebody help me.

I have not had much luck with doing this type of thing. Some objects maintain their position and the elevation changes automatically others get hosted to the new level at the same elevation. I think you need to be aware of how the objects behave and use the appropriate method.

Drafting is a breeze and Revit doesn't always work the way you think it should.

Hello,

You can change the level for pipes, ducts, cable trays and conduits, they won´t move.

But if you do that with the fittings the will change position, the proper way to do that is to remove the fittings and recreate them using trim command after adjusting the pipes level, them they will acquire the pipes level.

But IMHO this task should be done by the MEP consultant, delivering an appropriate model is a requirement, or should be.

Hi Sæmorr,

That was an interesting way to keep the element on the same level while changing its host. I have 2 questions for you. Did you had the elements (object) with different elevation and same host? If yes, did you changed the elevation of each element individually by using the above mentioned formula for New Elevation so as to keep the position of elements on xyz plane same as original.

Thank you  for your answer!! I think I will ask for that I tried to solve it so we don't get back on the schedule to much, because as you have said this will take time.

There is one solution I have found useful. When you have object/objects inside a group you select them one by one (without entering edit group mode) and then select pick new host. Revit will reassign the new host and the object/objects remain in the original position.

This can be useful for instance when you have a balcony escape hatch which is inside a group and after copying it to another level it doesn't create an opening for the floor slab since the original host of the object is different. This method worked with me at least.

I am not sure what is your exact requirement . But if it is hosted you might find EDIT WORK PLAN option.

Create Work Plan First the location you want to keep elements, Name it , and use edit work plan  and select the Work plan.

This might work

This person may have had an issue similar to mine. You have a floor hosted family that needs to be placed radially on a floor with variable sloping. In my case, this is a large theater. For whatever reason my family gets neatly hosted parallel to the slop in the beginning and end of my radial array- but the middle do not. I've tried placing the middle objects in every possible way- re-hosting, copying, placing then moving etc. Nothing works because of course this is is Autodesk. I was hoping to do the same thing- keep the center of the element in the same x-y place but let it realign to the unique, compound slope it is over.

8 years since this question and still the same lack of curiosity and diligence by architecture's only monopoly company.

Your issue is quite different. The topic is about assigning elements to a different level and maintaining their current position.

I totally agree. This would be a great functionality.

ctrl+x then paste in place - I deal with this when I have a new window hitting at the intersection of a new wall and an existing wall - the hosting is almost always wrong the first time resulting in the window not cutting the wall properly.
