Can't select an object in a view

In MEP 2011, I have a VAV in a ceiling view and I can't select it by clicking on it.  I can only select it by drag-select or by selecting it in the 3D view.  What am I missing?

The room is 15' high.  Their is a ceiling grid at 10'.  The view is a ceiling view (mechanical discipline), view range: Top (floor + 15' offset), View Depth Level (floor + 15' offset).   I have a set of diffuser hosted on the ceiling and I can select those.  I have the VAV sitting at 13' and I can't select it.  If I bring the VAV at 10', than I can select it.

I thought that if I the view range was set to see the oject in the view I should be able to select it, but it looks like I can view the object but that is it not really part of the view.

Any idea what to do?

If its a reflected ceiling plan, the ceiling is in front of the VAV. You can still see the VAV because other disciplines stuff shows transparent in MEP views.

You can;

-work in wire frame

-turn off the ceiling in the view

-make a plan view with the view range set to just under the floor above & set the ceiling to transparent so you can see the walls etc below

None are perfect, so choose the ones that suits you best.

I tend to do a combination of the 1st & 3rd ones.
