Can't change pipe offset to add vertical pipe

I'm trying to add some vertical pipe to a model. All the instructions and videos I've seen show how to change the Offset to add vertical pipe in a plan view. My offset is greyed out as soon as I pick the first point. Why can I not add a vertical pipe or change my offset? My ribbon (Revit 2017) does not appear to have everything in it that some of the Revit Help indicates.

Well, something happened. It's working now. I started a new project and everything worked fine. Went back to my other project and still no go. I copied a piping style, changed some views and it's working. I'm not really sure what did it. I have found that currently, I can add vertical pipe in a floor plan (a level) but not in a section cut that is rotated to be a plan view.

Now I just need to get a handle on when to click, enter, pick apply, change offset, etc. Adding vertical pipe is not very intuitive (to me).
