Auto Refresh/Reset of Family Instance Parameters

On occasion, before placing a device in the model, if an instance parameter value is changed, when the curser moves out of the properties window, Revit will refresh and reset the values to the family default value. The only way we have found to fix is delete the family from the project and then reinstall the family. Initially the family works in the project, but then it starts this reset/refresh and it is rather unproductive. Anyone experience the same and know of a way to fix?

I think that is because, until an element is in placed, it doesn't exist. In other words, there is no instance to apply the changes to, so those changes get applied to the default values. I've always adjusted instance parameters after placement and am away from Revit until tomorrow so can't play with it.

same issue in 2024... RobDraw's advice does not apply. I have placed several instances of the family and it still keeps reseting exectly as OP describes...
