Anyone figured out a way to get a pipe tap to see host pipe size?

I am looking for a good way to get a mechanical tee to act like a mechanical tee in Revit.

 

The standard tap I have no problem making. However, mechanical tees, for those maybe unfamiliar, are like taps but they have a u-bolt or a coupling sort of assembly that fixes it to the host pipe. In essence, it is a tap but with a bit more going on.

 

What I am wanting to do is to  have the u-bolt or coupling sort of assembly size based on the pipe that the mech tee is hosted too.

 

So far, my ideas have brought me nothing and leaving me having to size the mech tee manually. That just would not be much fun in an actual job.

 

Worst case, i can have a routine chase these and size. I'd rather not do that though.

Sounds like you could incorporate the appropriate geometry and parameters/lookup tables into your typical pipe tap family. You could definitely achieve what you are looking for with a lookup table.

 

Are you familiar with these? If not, I'd suggest uploading the family and I may be able to help.

Very familiar with lookup tables but the lookup tables would have to be driven by something.

 

For instance, Lets say I have a 1" (25 mm) pipe intersecting a 2" (50 mm) pipe with the mechanical tee tap that I am wanting and then I change the 2" (50 mm) pipe to 2.5" (65 mm) pipe. The 1" (25 mm) pipe didn't change. Only the pipe hosting the mechanical tee changed. That 'should' force a change in the mechanical tee. So far, I have only been successful when changing the 1" (25 mm) pipe.

 

Make sense?

The mechanical Tee you are looking for does it look similar to Image attached.

It the 'type' of part that I am looking for but requires manual input for sizing. I looked at this before my original post.

 

I am wanting the mechanical tee to act like a tap as that is basically what it is and not an accessory.

 

This tap is different than a welded outlet in that it has a portion that isn't only sized by the branch pipe but also by the pipe hosting it.

 

For instance, for your average tap in Revit, it's dimensions are dictated solely by the branch pipe and the larger pipe that is being host to the branch pipe doesn't play any part in its sizing. What I am looking for is a way for the larger pipe that is playing host to the tap to be accessed for some dimensional control.

Hi Barry,

 

Apologies, I completely missed the point o your post; despite it being in the title itself. Since then, I have been playing with Dynamo to see if I could find a way to get the size of the host pipe.

 

Unfortunately I haven't had any luck thus far, though I'm no expert when it comes to Dynamo. If you're familiar with it I'd suggest playing around with it and see how you go, otherwise opening another thread with a focus on Dynamo may be appropriate.

The only way I know to "read" the main pipe size is using tees.
