2019.2: Hiding elements from linked files

Hello, everyone.

I'm doing the MEP work in Revit 2019.2, with a linked architectural Revit project. I'm trying to hide specific elements from the link to properly show the background.

I just learned that 2016 Revit had the ability to hide individual elements from linked files, but so far in 2019.2 I can only choose to hide a full Category (which removes too much, no thanks to the architect).

Does anyone know if individual linked element hiding has been deliberately plucked from Revit, or maybe hotfixed back in? Thanks.

Can't you TAB to highlight the linked elements and Hide them in View?

No, I cannot. When I hit the TAB, I do select the individual element that I want to hide. But when I right click to select "Hide In View", the only available option is Category. Elements and By Filter are grayed out and inaccessible.

I think the link is set to By Linked View or Custom under VG > Revit Links > Display Settings.  Hide elements in View works if the Link is set to By Host view.

Yes, I see that switching the VG's to By Host View did reactivate the Hide Elements option. However, it ruined my background by turning on element categories I had successfully hidden, changing my linked view ranges and underlays, and more utter destruction.

Do you or anyone else have any other approaches? Thanks.

If you want something other than what the linked view is showing, you need to set up your own view settings for the link. You can't do a hybrid approach. Also, you can't show annotation elements when turning off "by linked view".

I usually have to use a combination of hiding work sets, categories, and elements to get a plan to show what I want.

It’s a huge help to make keyboard shortcuts for “hide category” and especially “ hide element”.  Keeps you from having to drag the mouse up to the ribbon panel over and over, and also avoids the right click menu.   Sometimes I’ll even tab select several elements and then type “HE” to hide those elements only.

Worksets shouldn't be used for visibility purposes.
