Spacial/Room Recognition for any family

Currently Electrical Equipment has the abilty to know were it is in the model by being placed in a room. We would like this behavior in all families. This will assist in room and spacial kitting. The only know way to hack this is to nest an eletrical equip family into another, this option bloats the model. 

In out industry we want this power for scheduling out rooms and spaces which helps to sort and do a cost analasys of the area/room/ space. The user would add rooms or spaces as normal and draw components in the modelsapce as usuall. behind the scenes revit makes the associationa and allocate  the family to the region.

I hope this can be done as there is great value here.

This is already available in Revit. Create a Multi-category schedule and select the the fields you want to include, like Family and Count, then click on the "Select available fields from:" box above that and select Room and then the Room Number field to add to the schedule.

Most 3D components have a 3D Room Calculation Point available in the family editor's Family Parameters. If this is unchecked, check it and move the green point to somewhere near the centroid of the family so it won't get confused if placed accidentally just inside a wall.

Using this method, a schedule of randomly-chosen components, sorted by Room Number then by Family and Type, looks like this:

Note that the columns did not have the option of a Room Calculation Point in the family editor. I have not explored what it takes to add Room Calculation Points to families that do not have them - it's probably locked up in the template for that category.

Does this help for the kinds of components you are working with?

Bill, I don't see the Room Calculation point for all families. Kind of what I am asking for as a feature above. Conduit fittings for example, since I am in MEP space, specifically for electrical don't have that option.

'm in 2018-2020 and see it for the Electrical Equipment and Fixtures but not Conduit Fittings. Thank You for the comment.

So it would seem that "Add a Room Calculation Point to ALL Categories" might sum up your wish. My guess is that pretty much every discipline except Civil would find this very useful. Good call.

I'm working on a large project, and having room tags for electrical would make a lot of my data input so much easier.
