Revit Links automatically load 'All' Worksets by default

Revit Links automatically load 'All' Worksets by default

When linking new models into your Revit model, I find that I have to always specify 'All' worksets rather than it defaulting to 'Last viewed'.

Minor thing really, however I teach Revit to multiple staff members and I'm always reminding them to make sure they check 'All' worksets when loading rather than the default of 'Last viewed'.

Wastes time having to re-open a model because all the worksets didn't load.

I mean no disrespect but it does not sound like you fully understand the Worksets options .

With large models, we tend to choose the 'Specify' option to choose a only Worksets which do not have linked models to be loaded (open).  We find that excluding those Worksets which hold Linked Models helps to speed up opening the model initially, as it doesn't have to actually load the linked models themselves.

Once the model is open, we then open the other Worksets that we need to via the worksets window by simply changing them from 'Closed' to 'Open.'

The 'Last Viewed' option will (I believe) open the Worksets which were open during the latest Synchronise with Central.

Worth checking the Autodesk documentation on this subject first, I would say:

@Anonymous I fully understand how worksets work, and I understand and agree with your opinion.

I'm usually working with models which will only have 2 or 3 models linked into it, on worksets. So we want everything to load rather than have to specify every time.

Side info: When you open a file with the specify worksets option and change your mind (ie you do not want to open the file anymore) you cannot cancel the operation as the cancel button suggests but you simply cancel the workset selection and continue with none at all. I admit I was annoyed with this but now often use this bug feature to check on files that will not otherwise open any more.

I figured that even if I choose not to load even a single workset, revit still checks every single linked file and even complains about dwgs having too large coordinates or an entity it cannot handle when I explicitly did not want this loaded.

So far every revit model I linked into others loaded all worksets that were set to 'visible in all views' and not only the last one used. I will pay more attention to see whether this is not the case. If I run into this again, I will remember this idea/bug report.

@JL.FCG - I fear I have totally misread your initial post! I thought you were talking about opening a model, but it seems you were talking about Adding a new Linked model once you're inside an existing model?

If that's the case then I don't know what your issue is as I don't know how to choose what Worksets are visible in a linked model before you even link it in. I am only able to get those sorts of options when dealing with layers of DWG files.

@MichaelWolff - that is a helpful tip to know about! Thank you!

This extra menu only appears if you select another file with worksets. The screenshot was made in R19 so it's been around at least since then.

@JL.FCG When setting up a central model file there are options to choose from. The default is 'last displayed' or something. Changing this to 'Select all' should do the trick. This is when you first save your file that is to be shared and setup collaboration only. Otherwise you will have to disconnect and save a new central file.
