Revit for Mac
Please start producing REVIT for Mac. It is a must have application for architecture students and the mac industry occupies a huge part of the computer industry. We really need the software.
No problem. If a person wants to buy a computer for which there is no software, then asking someone to develop it, instead of buying the right computers with the right software already existing, I think is still a good thing. If everyone logically bought objects suitable for their use, perhaps there would be less innovation and less research in new directions. Furthermore, Macs are amazing and will be very powerful in the future if the evolution of the M series processors continues, even in 3D graphics, and perhaps they represent the future, even if today they still have to make progress and no one develops the essential software for technicians, so it's right to take a risk and move forward. I think it's an excellent point of view and if you are a Mac fan it should be followed.
In my day job I use Revit on a Lenovo PC running Windows 11 as my main tool. At home (as my side gig), I run Archicad on a Apple Mac Studio running the latest OSX. The rest of the software stack is mostly the same (AutoCAD, Adobe CC, Twinmotion, Teams, Office apps…).
At work I am daily frustrated by the clumsiness and inherent instability of the Windows 11. It is a resource hog, malware riddled piece of work, that should have no place in a modern office. It is the single biggest limiting factor of my productivity.
At home, working on my side gig and for fun, I struggle with the bloated softness that is Archicad. Features added without any consideration of usefulness and control taken from the user (or hidden behind layers and layers incomprehensible menus).
I wish I could have the fluidity of the OSX at work too and I wish I could have the logical efficiency of the Revit at home.
PLEASE, PLEASE MAKE REVIT FOR OSX, please!
My ears are bleeding from the sound of the PC fans.
Not going to happen. Autodesk (along with Adobe/Microsoft) are moving to cloud-based software, so you won't have a hardware platform-based applications in the near future.
As for students, we were all students once, but they don't spend a lot on software (quite the opposite,) so shareholder-run corporations don't like investing in them, so it's not a useful argument.
@ola6n4qrvdsrUnless Autodesk can guarantee fast and unfettered internet access for all of their customers there will most likely be an option for local hardware applications for many years in the future.
And you're forgetting a basic long-term marketing strategy...a few years down the road students graduate, have opinions and influence, and even start firms of their own. It's why companies provide access to students and universities at deeply discounted rates.
+1 for MacOS version - it does work OK using Parallels Desktop, but I have been considering switching to PC or look into Archicad more because of this.
I am 70 tears old and been using AutoCad and then Revit for 30 years. I moved to Revit about 15 years ago. I then got a MAC for private life and never dealt with blue screens and constant reboots. I run a M2 now with 96g memory and 8tb drive and it is very fast. I dedicated 2tb to VM. In the past I was taking a class for Revit I was using my MAC with VM (left company DELL at desk) and was running circles around everyone in class with speed and even the instructor was amazed. I have been working for myself the last 5 years on my MAC with VM and ACC and very pleased with the speed(and no constant reboots). I have been hoping for Revit MAC version and have come to the conclusion it is not going to happen. I have decided to retire, I don't want to keep having to run VM and also concluded Autodesk doesn't care. They have and are moving directions I don't care for. I am not spending another 4k next year, I don't believe in not owning what I buy and only upgrading if I see the value. I don't like the internet directions, never worked well for me at an Architectural firm I worked for who wanted me to use . I do like the ACC and that is a very good directions as long as I can work on local computer and keep saving to ACC, but I never would want to be totally dependent on the internet. Since Revit and Solidworks are the only 2 programs I use the VM for, I decided to retire and get rid of the extra expenses. Hopefully a company with deep pockets will see the value and compete with Autodesk with a full BIM program and bring them back to senses. To Autodesk we are a CASH cow and they will never change until a drastic drop in customer base shows that they demand it.
