Revit: Additional filter options for multiple selection

Revit: Additional filter options for multiple selection

Suggested by ATP Munich office:

With multiple selection (selection window) currently a filter for categories is offered:

open filter.jpg

The wish is to add functionality to the filter dialog, so 3 additional sub settings are available to narrow down the current selection.

This example shows how parameter and values could be integrated in the dialog:

improved filter.jpg

Benefit of this enhancement would be, that no filters would need to be setup in VV and no new view for this filter need to be created.
This will lead to less filters and views and will help to keep big project simple and easy to handle for the different teams working on it.

Fabrication CADmep had a very nifty command called mapfilter. You could actually create filter logic on selection sets of objects. Think of applying view filter functionality to window selection of objects. That could be a similar approach to this request.

Instead of Autodesk deciding what new properties would be included in the filter, let the user create their own and save that filter setting.

I would appreciate to be able to filter selected elements by materials.

There could be a button to show or not the materials.

Activating the button would show the different materials of the elements.

In this exemple, it would be possible to still select all the "structural column" in 1 clic but also to choose only "concrete" or "steel" ones.

And/Or There could be a little "+" beside each item to let us see materials or not.

So if there's a lot of things selected with multiple materials, the list could stay short.

We could clic only on the "+" beside the item we want and not see all the materials of all the items.

A lot of time there is a concrete column under the steel one.

If I need to select a couple of steel columns (that are not the same size), it would be really quick to select a lot of elements in the view, use "filter" and clic only on steel column instead of selecting columns one by one, while having to press tab multiple times here and there.

Hi, @Evalucia ,

Here is a similar Idea. Do you mind if I combine yours with this one?

Hi, I found this thread but I thought it was for the filters in "VG" (the
one that allow application of changes in views and not the one that help us
select elements).

If it's the same idea, of course it can be combined.

@Evalucia , I see what you are saying. The other post is a little more general. I will keep them separate.

Thank you!

Wouldn't it be just great if in Revit there will be a way to filter selected objects not only by general object

floors, walls, windows ect.

But if there would be a way to filter by type or by family.

Like what there is in Auto Cad- quick select, that it's possible to filter a bit more specifically.

Or to make it work the same way like the schedule filter+ by specifically selected objects

Thanks!

Good idea.

Meanwhile i strongly suggest to do it by Dynamo/Python.

@Yien_Chao

can you please explain how to work the Dynamo/Python?

it will be very helpful

@nechama1186  please start a discussion in the forum. I will try to answer there.

It would be great to be able to filter by different things even more, such as filter per family type in a specific category (the same way you can filter through different types of lines) ... or filter through worksets...could we also see a "halftone workset" option in  the Visibilty/Graphics pages

There is the filter tool that allows you to filter your selection down to the category. Brilliant. I propose to filter this further so that once you are down to a single category the filter tool spreads into parameters that distinguish the selected elements from one another.

That way you could select a long outer wall of an industrial edifice in a floor plan, filter the structural columns and once you are there close down the selection to just those columns that are made of concrete or those that sport a fire rating or anything.

Hi @kimberly_fuhrman-jones , someone posted an idea related to mine : Filter filter , maybe we could link them together ?

Thanks !

This one falls under the category of "even I can do it" and I'm a poor programmer. Autodesk has some really good ones so this would be a snap for them, they have the pieces in place already, see this thread:
