Reset family parameters

Reset family parameters

It would be brilliant if Revit offered a button to erase all non-Revit parameters from a family. Every object making use of these parameters would revert to the value they had when they were erased. This would ease using families of dubious origin from the world wide web.

For the afraid the button could offer a fail safe request whether the user was absolutely certain.

Will continue to erase all of the surplus bim object parameters now.

Agreed there needs to be an easier way to remove parameters, however I think it should just be the ability to select more than one parameter at a time and delete them.

A single button that removes all parameters except the built-ins could be problematic.

I agree with @Mike.FORM. Hard no to a button that would break pretty much any family its used on. Selecting and modifying multiple parameters at once would help solve your issue. This is also why I avoid downloading families unless its absolutely necessary.

@Mike.FORM @mhiserZFHXS Killing all extra parameters will certainly kill most of the parametrics other than those instigated by ootb parameters which is the point of the idea. The button would freeze the currently selected version of any value (of any category). Just in the same way as though you had erased every surplus parameter individually.

@MichaelWolff I am just worried more about accidental deletion by someone who does not quite know what they are doing.

If it was made extremely obvious by moving this button to the right side at the bottom so it is not near the other buttons in the dialogue and it also gave an "ARE YOU SURE" confirmation pop-up with a description of what's actually happening that would help.

However, I would still like the ability to just do a multi-select and delete multiple at once as well.

This would be great specifically for manufacturer revit families where they include all the fluff in the Identity Data category.

@Mike.FORMThat's exactly my concern, and an "ARE YOU SURE" warning doesn't alleviate those concerns for me. It should not be easy to break a family.

If this is something you really want for yourself, I'm sure a Dynamo script could be written to do it.

@mhiserZFHXS Agreed, it can definitely be a slippery slope allowing complete deletion with a single click (or even 2).

Even if they eventually allow multiple parameter selection and deletion, I don't think I would want the ability to shift select. I would want users to have to select each and every parameter so it is guaranteed that they actually took a half second to think.

@MichaelWolff Definitely needed.
@Mike.FORM @mhiserZFHXS  What if there was a purge parameter button at the bottom of the dialog box that showed a list of all of the "non-dependent parameter's" where you could choose which ones you wanted to delete.
This would look and operate in the same way as the main "purge unused tool"

@Mark_Engwirda Maybe. But again, just being able to select and modify multiple parameters at once would essentially do this for you, along with many other things. Why add multiple tools/buttons when one functionality would allow for all of it?

@mhiserZFHXS I'm thinking the purge button with a dialog box showing what could be purged would be simple, that would be my reasoning.
What's your thinking if you could do a multiple selection of parameters other than a delete/purge, how would that look, what could you actually do with a multiple selection other than a multiple delete, sounds tricky.

While I would like selecting multiple parameters and then getting rid of them in one go, this would require a number of mouse clicks in conjunction with keyboard keys held down. Eliminating all non-Autodesk parameters would only require erasing every parameter with a positive Revit Id. Wait, this sounds like something that can be done in pyRevit - just not inside the family type parameter window.
