Reinforcement set IFC

Reinforcement set IFC

Hi,

When I select a rebar within a rebar set in Revit(2019), all the bars in the set is selected. However, when exporting an IFC, the set is exploded into single reinforcement bars. Is it possible to maintain the set in the IFC export?

The functionality i'm looking for is that when i select a rebar element in the IFC, the whole set is selected.

kind regards

Tekla has this function. Revit should have this. They ask for it om building siste as they use the IFC model for rebar construction. No drawings.

We've had success with this function in Tekla. It would be very useful if this was available in Revit as well.

I managed this when setting IFC Options to IfcReinforcingElement, but it took forever to export out from revit.

It is obviously possible but actually useless now cause of time it takes to export.

I tried Tom's solution and it worked with me as well. But as he said it took a long time to export, and the relatively small file containing only rebars increased from 13mb to 245mb. I'm not sure my computer would handle a large model. So clearly Autodesk have some work set out form them in improving this feature. Because this is a "must have" in model-based construction.

There should also be the option to group multiple single rebars or rebar-sets so they belong to the same set. Because there is often a need to split the rebar sets in revit, in order to adjust to the geometry (for instance a cut out) or other rebar elements.

I used 3rd party ifc viewer's add on exporter to get the rebars out as rebar set.
Annoyingly all rebars show up as line. Not sure what did I missing.
You'll know the software from its interface so I won't mention the name here.
Autodesk need to implement this function ASAP.
The whole thing came out only 37.4 MB compare to Revit's IFC export one at 214 MB, this one also need fix. Capture.PNG

When installing the following additional module from SOFiSTiK, the reinforcement is grouped.

Any chance for resolving this issue in Revit 2025? @peticid

Hi Mariusz,

I appreciate your interest for this feature and we acknowledge its importance for rebar coordination workflows. This feature is on our public roadmap, but we cannot make any reference to the version when it could be released.

Kind regards,

Thank you for your reply, in that case I've got one additional question - have you heard of any workaround for this issue? Are there any add-ons which might help?

I recommend you to try this free tool provided by SOFiSTiK: https://github.com/SOFiSTiK/revit-ifc-exporter/releases

I did a small test for Revit 2024 by following the steps described there and rebar sets grouping is preserved during the export. It works for both varying and uniform sets.

Please let me know how this works for you.

Hi everyone,

Thanks to Dan's solution I managed to export my reinforcement as sets, but now I need to solve another issue. I'd like to assign my rebar sets to desired levels manually. Usually, I use IfcSpatialContainer parameter for this purpose and it works fine, but unfortunately not for reinforcement... I think rebar sets are automatically assigned to theirs host base levels - that's why I can't change it.

Any idea how to solve it?

We are pleased to say that this has been implemented in Revit 2025.3! Thank you for your contribution to improving Revit!
