Password Protection / read only / families protection

Password Protection / read only / families protection

Does anyone else need to have the ability to password protect their files? We are having huge issues with people modifying our work without consent, or simply copying all the custom families and templates/settings and reusing them in other firms. This seems like a really simple thing to implement to protect intellectual property and make sure that what you put in the file is what is in there and is not modified by others... I see there is only 1 post about this and i am so surprised because i find this topic on so many other forums.. https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/revit-ideas/password-protection/idi-p/8188981

I think I agree here. I made this post on another forum, but I'll post here as well. Our biggest concern right now is locking families from unauthorized edits within our organization.

In our company, we've developed families and Dynamo scripts designed to work in tandem. However, we're facing a recurring issue where team members across various projects modify these families without notifying the development team. This leads to:

  1. Broken families and dysfunctional Dynamo scripts
  2. Numerous complaints about non-working scripts
  3. Time-consuming investigations to identify unauthorized family edits

Despite ongoing education and training, there's invariably someone who alters a family, disrupting its functionality for the entire project.

Wouldn't the ability to lock families from internal modifications be a valuable feature? And could it prevent unintended disruptions and maintain the integrity of our carefully crafted workflows?

Additionally, I agree with the point raised about long-term considerations, where the owner may want to make further additions or changes. A decade from now, when using Revit 2035 (or whatever version exists then), the company working on the project will likely have their own families and standards, potentially rendering our current families obsolete anyway. They would not have our Dynamo scripts either.
