Override Basic Colors

Override Basic Colors

I'm tempted to start recording how much time we spend putting in color definitions to define colors for color schemes, area schemes, filters etc.  We use the same colors on every project and literally none of these are in the 'basic colors' palette.  Lets just look at that palette for a moment...

2016-12-02_13-04-59.png

If we look at the greens that exist on rows 1-3 - there are 5 colors here which to all intents and purposes are identical... we then have a couple of yellows that same, with orange, teal and some insipid yellowy green color following suit.  All in a thoroughly useless palette of colors.  I can imagine how the conversation went back in '97 'just pick some random colors for now, we'll change them later on to something better', nearly 20 years later I'm sure it must be almost on someone's to-do list...

Anyway, back to the IDEA... it would be really useful (for us at least) if there were a method to load in different palette of colors.  Word offers something like this where they have different palette styles defined and you simply pick the one you want to use.  I know you can define your own custom colours via the ini file but that's not ideal.  We have scope here to define 48 colors that get used on a daily basis, the actual solution may not be a simple one but if implemented it would be a great way to cut out a lot of wasted time on projects.

@kimberly_fuhrman-jones Hi, this idea should be marked as implemented in Revit 2024

El estado se ha cambiado a: Implemented

We are pleased to say that this has been implemented in Revit 2024! Thank you for your contribution to improving Revit!

Implemented. So how do I load a new set of colours into the new colour browser? I did register that you now have more colour systems that refer to external files where you only had Pantone before.

Am I missing something?

The easiest thing is to define your own color book at the link below but you can also edit it manually if you prefer.  You then link that into your Revit file and select accordingly.

What you still can't do is change the colors that are in the standard palette but the implemented solution does give you a lot of flexibility.

@Keith_Wilkinson Thanks for that link. Do you consider it done then?

Yeah, pretty much.  I wanted access to standard color systems and this provides that functionality.

the base colors are still rubbish but this solution arguably gives better overall functionality as we can define color tables for different use cases.

Poorly implement IMHO.

But guess that after 20 years, it's better than nothing at all...

you can now create your own color books. it's quite time-consuming with the online editor, but it's better than nothing. But if the color book entry is changed ... the objects with the color linked from the colorbook lose this connection and jump back to RGB. It is not possible to adjust the linked objects by adjusting the color book. However, this would be very helpful to be able to implement other national standards or deviating customer standards.

What a hideous implementation of the idea...

If we are able to create the custom colors why cant we just apply this same ability to the basic colors. 16 colors is not enough. The colors books are a terrible way to select colors especially when there is a specific pallete of colors that I would like to use between all projects.

Let me explain why 16 colors is not enough...

Although these colors may primarily be used for graphic appearance, they can also be used in appearance materials and for colors of materials say for paint or plam or plastic, etc... Considering this, we can easily go over 16 materials in a project that might want different or slightly different colors represented either in graphic or rendered views. Additionally, you may be using some of those colors for things like grass, water, various pavements or ground covers, asphalts, sky, mulch etc... which are not even part of the building materials.
