Option to not join geometry of new & existing elements of the same material

For example. when modeling an existing concrete wall with an adjacent new concrete pier, both at the same top & bottom level/offset, the elements automatically join together if they use the same material category. There should be an option to show them separated with a line between them. As of now, the only way I could find to do that is to change the material category of one of the elements so that they don't match, even if they are the same material (concrete)
