Left/Right Keys are just one way to expand/collapse (E/C). You can also click on the +/- symbol or double-click on a category to E/C. These three methods will E/C only affect one level below the selection--other levels below stay at their current E/C status. But now you can use this feature: Right-click on the +/- symbol (to the right of the category) or on the category itself. A window with contextual options will appear. The window will contain all or some of the following four options: Expand All, Expand Selected, Collapse All or Collapse Selected. Selecting any of these four options will allow FULL E/C of all levels (E/C ALL) or only all the levels below the selection (E/C Selected). So, e.g., if you want to return to a fully collapsed state at all levels, select the "Collapse All" from the context menu.
By the way, the asterisk feature (*) to expand all seems to have disappeared.
HOWEVER: It still would be nice to right-click on the vertical "lines" to collapse, rather than a left and a right mouse clicks and also E/C via a keyboard shortcut. Either option would help streamline the workflow.
It's always been a pet peeve of mine that you can't collapse just a specific branch (without scrolling all the way to the top/root). For example, when I'm navigating through the expanded "Families" branch, in most projects it will have several hundred families and types. The option exists (by right-click/context menu) to "Expand All" or "Collapse All". All well and good, but it's like using a nuclear warhead when you just want to plink a tin can off the fence. I just want to quickly get somewhere else in the browser without scrolling several hundred lines, or collapsing all the other branches at the same time and then having to re-open everything that just collapsed.
How about "Collapse this Branch/Folder" as an option available anywhere in the project browser? (The use of + and - keys is useful, but of limited functionality if you're at the bottom of a fully expanded branch. It's only useful if you're at the top of the branch in the browser already.)
@Todd_Moon This is now a feature as of at least version 2022.1 I believe. By right clicking on a branch, you can get the following options. If some of the options are not available, it means that the branch is already fully collapsed or fully expanded.
Thanks for the input @Ric_Weber, but "Collapse Selected" only appears if you are *already* at the root of the branch. That's nice, but *not* the functionality that I am describing. That means I have already moved to the root. If I'm several hundred items deep in the family branch, it takes quite an effort to return to the root node of the branch (even with a wheel scroll mouse that I spin very quickly.) I've since learned about the use of the +/- keystroke when the project browser is in focus, however, it still takes several presses of the minus key to progressively collapse the structure back to the root of a particular branch. A single selection from the context menu would be much nicer, particularly since I have to look down at the keyboard to find the minus key and then re-focus my attention back on the screen. Again, the functionality that I would like to see is something that might be called "Collapse entire Branch" and is available no matter where in the branch you make a right-click. Cheers! Todd
@Todd_Moon Oh, I see what you're saying now. Guess I've never run into a single branch that was that big before. So what you're saying is that you'd like to be able to click anywhere in the list of items in a branch and get that same option.
If you post this as a new idea, which is what you should do, post the URL here and I'll go out and vote for it.
@Ric_Weber I've posted the idea, but I don't know how to post the URL to that idea here. I gave it the title: Option to Collapse all items in a Branch of the Project Browser (from anywhere, not just the top/root)
