Openings is a constant source of frustration between Architects, Structural Engineers and MEP Engineers, as it is very costly if you miss an opening and it has to be retro cored on site.
Our company is multidisciplinary (All MEP and Structural) and we still get it wrong on projects where we do all services.
It would be fantastic to have an opening object that could be shared between linked models, associated with services i.e. ducts, cable trays, pipes etc. and a method to do clash detection to ensure that everybody in the team is aware of the required opening.
We use this modern piece of software and we still end up issuing paper drawing to each other to double check that we did not miss an opening.
And on that topic, why not create a special category for builders work. If we can have "Nurse Call" why can't we have "Opening" or "Builders Work" or similar.
Thanks for taking the time to submit your idea. Unfortunately, this idea did not get the support of the community over the last 6 months and as such we will not be pursuing it at this time. Please feel free to rework (titles and clear descriptions are really important) and resubmit this one down the road.
@sasha.crotty would love to see this topic discussed again as previously highlighted by @roelie_oelofse I would have expected this to be more widely discussed by anyone experienced that provides design support during construction but it may also be because of the type of audience within this network.
To reiterate Rolie's points above, this is a massively time consuming & costly process for Multi-discipline Bim co-ordination especially in the semi-conductor/pharmaceutical industries, it is always a moving target with constant change management required.
The holy grail (even aspirational) would possibly have some or all of the items suggested below:
A revit file that could cut opes in any other disciplines revit content when linked into their working files (currently Structural and Architectural disciplines have to create duplicate openings in walls, floors etc as openings created by architectural are not recognised in a linked Structural file with Reinforced concrete walls, shear walls etc. Single content source would mean less creation time, change management etc.
Enhance Revit to recognise the edges/faces of content from linked co-ordination models in order to create new opes (We use linked revit files for large facilities especially process pipework as their files normally crash architectural revit models frequently. We are moving towards linked co-ordination models more and more as they are not as memory hungry. Constantly reverting to Navis is way too time consuming
A plugin in with automatic ope creation for pipe centerlines clashing with specified content RC walls/ fire walls etc (from co-ordination or other models) with the ability to set different ope types/categories with offset distance parameters in x and y
The ability to Track ope changes (link/associate opes to specific elements within revit ie pipes, trestles etc) that highlights change when the opes and associated content go out of sync (move away from each other)
Construction companies are now looking for more and more information up front with regards to openings because when they are missed it is extremely costly and drives considerable delays to schedule etc. On a large scale multidisciplinary projects I am currently on this element of the contract has swallowed thousands of design hours. looking forward to feedback....
