Open with links unloaded

Open with links unloaded

I would like to be able to open a central file with all links unloaded.  This is especially useful when upgrading files to a newer version so you do not have to wait while all links are also temporarily upgraded then go back and upgrade the links again individually.  If you code the version of Revit into the file names you have to rename the links anyway when you upgrade them then go back to the central and "reload from" to switch to the newer version linked file.  If your files are large, upgrading the main file as well as all the links in the same process can crash if you run out of RAM.  Being able to open and upgrade the main file separate from all the links solves this issue.

I agree this would be handy.  A workaround which we use is to place each link on its own workset, then we can open the model with the workset closed to upgrade/troubleshoot.

I agree. Very useful idea. I have proposed the same in the past!

The process I use when upgrading is to rename all of the files first. Stick an "X" in front of the name, or something.

Then as you're going through upgrading files, it won't find the Links and thus won't try to update them.

After each file has finished upgrading, SaveAs to the original file name.

Start with the linked consultant's models and work your way up to your "Parent" model.

By the time you get to the parent model, all of the Links will have been upgraded as restored to their original name, so the parent will find everything.

The other advantage of this process is that Revit doesn't lose the Loaded/Unloaded status when it can't find the link. Once the file is re-saved with the original name, it will still be Loaded or Unloaded as it was before the upgrade.

I hate links on worksets to control loading! Would be HIGHLY beneficial to control the load of links on open/startup so as not to add dozens of useless worksets in the model!

Thanks for taking the time to submit your idea. Unfortunately, this idea did not get the support of the community over the last 6 months and as such we will not be pursuing it at this time. Please feel free to rework (titles and clear descriptions are really important) and resubmit this one down the road.

This is still true today - especially since putting linked files onto their own workset and choosing not to load this does not seem to hinder Revit (2024!) do go looking for them anyway.

@MichaelWolff for large projects links on worksets isn't a workable solution.  Having an airport concourse with A-J sections for each of the A/S/M/E/P/FP/T/I/R just doesn't need additional worksets on top of the 9+ base worksets in the model.  The idea of layers in CAD was bad enough but then to extend that broken CAD idea into revit is doubly bad!

@GallowayUS_com_RonAllen1 You are, of course right, but that was not my point at all which is that even putting linked cad files into their own worksets will not prevent them from being looked for and at by the app. The entry being archived just hindered me to vote this up. @sasha.crotty Please add my vote and re-archive.

Lol - it has been revived here:

Hi, @GallowayUS_com_RonAllen1 ,

Sasha is no longer moderating the Revit Ideas, but she notified me of your post. We don't typically resurrect archived Ideas (otherwise, what's the point of having an archive.) and unfortunately there is no way to just combine the votes. This is still a process that we are working through in the overall scheme of the Revit Ideas overhaul. It is best to upvote and promote the new Idea to gain more traction.

Thank you!
