Open Read-Only

Open Read-Only

AutoCAD's Open Dialog includes an option to open the file in a Read-Only mode.  I would like to have this same ability in Revit.

We routinely need to open a Revit file just to copy a family out or to take a measurement.  But we don't want to accidentally save the file PLUS if we were to open it in a read-only mode someone else could still open it for write purposes.

There is a Revit Viewer program that comes along with Revit. It allows just that. It's also good for PM's and Principals to have, so they're never really "IN" the model.

A feature we use at our firm: all projects consist of central file(s). This allows to create a detached file for the "copy a family out or to take a measurement". Additional central files make it possible to access the project by multiple users, even support is easily possible if a tech or bim-manager needs a quick look a the project even while team users are accessing it. Also backup purposes can be handy.

It would be great to have this option.

Now, since most of the projects where I work are on ACC, it would be even more interesting to be able to open collaborators’ models in Read Only mode.

We cannot open their model directly from Revit because we don’t have modification rights (which is completely justified).

But if we could access it in Read Only mode, it would avoid having to download the model from ACC to open it.
