Materials based filters

Materials based filters

It is essential that filters get more extended, for instance we need to be able to filter  (and thus color in) elements based on the materials it contains:

ability to color all floors that contain concrete in red, all ceilings that contain a certain insulation material in green, and so on... Too many times, in order to make clear plans for the constructor, we need to indicate where he has to use a certain material, and now this is far to complex to achieve. If you don't search yourself each and every family, or perhaps add a manual parameter, it is almost impossible. And I am convinced Revit is NOT MEANT to be driven by manually filled in parameter...

I join the opinion of blackr3, in Austria we have a representation for construction permit where materials get colors: concrete = green, insulation = rose and so on. I'am searching a solution for this probem since 2008 (https://ww3.cad.de/foren/ubb/Forum329/HTML/000739.shtml).

2021 and it still does not seem possible to filter using materials as a category.  This should be towards the top of the list for the next round of updates!

Exactly what we need!!! It would be helpful even if it was in a colour scheme style. Just something that allows us to select/filter/display by material would be amazing

Yes, we need to be able to filter by material. I hope the next update will add this feature.

The ability to apply a filter on a layer in a floor or wall. Currently if you apply a filter to a given floor or wall it applies the filter to all layers. If you only require a specific layer in the buildup to to have a filter applied the current option is to change the material properties. This would aid in quickly applying changes to specific layers without having to scroll or search for various layers in the materials., as everything would be pre setup up and all in one place.

I think it's necessary, I work on finishes, and every finish has his own activity in the proyect's budget, so I use Material quantity takeoff, And I really like more than one schedule for all the finishes. I can't create Mark, cause I used it for the location.

It would be most beneficial to be able to set up a view filter which is able to override the appearance of a System Family such as a wall or floor based on the material assigned to that layer. The filter would then override the layer only and not the whole wall or floor. We are often required to prepare colored layouts depicting different materials. Thus a cavity wall would not override the air gap, just the masonry, as an example.

This is untested, but with the addition of Foreground/Background patterns inside the material, I will be exploring using a symbolic foreground pattern and a model based background pattern to avoid using filters all together for finish plans.  I'm thinking about carpet finish plans for example where we may need to have a symbolic pattern and a key in order to display multiple different types of carpets.  Then in all of the templates, the foreground pattern for floors would be toggled off (which will be annoying to set up, but that is what dynamo is for).  In the finish plans, the foreground pattern will be toggled on.  This way it is truly the material driving the graphic display without a need for a filter based override.  It will be live based off the model element and I am hoping outside of the initial view template change, will avoid a lot of fuss.

Can anyone post how we can filter floors based on structural material?

We need the ability to create filters based on materials.

This goes hand is hand with the agility to phase materials.

Right now, materials are not well supported or useful, it's a mashup of nasty workarounds as soon as you want to:

-Highlight a particular material in a 3D view without ruining the rest of your project

-Estimate new vs existing materials

-Do anything useful or use BIM intelligence with materials

I'd like to chime in and say YES PLEASE! This would make my life easier in a multitude of ways.

Also be good if you have a thick membrane and want to filter it out in some views but keep in others for heights and falls.

As someone who creates visualizations directly from Revit, the <By Category> material is the bane of my existence.

+1 to being able to filter materials. It would save me days of work.

If you're trying to clean up materials, make sure to check out this add-on:

This would be perfect if they had a version for anything beyond Revit 2020...

We stopped using 2020 as a standard years ago. Fingers crossed they update the plugin

I agree! This is absolutely essential!

It would be great to be able to apply filters to the different materials within wall structure

Unbelievable that this is still not possible. WE NEED THIS!
