Let me make a simple table

Let me make a simple table

Come on. It's time to just let us make tables from scratch in Revit. No more crazy Excel workarounds and no more hijacking a category I'm not going to use and hacking its schedule. I just want to be able to make a simple table straight in Revit.

Thanks for the submission and keep voting! discussing great ideas that we can ignore so we can focus on the important things like Evacuation Simulators and other nonsense that no one needs to use on a daily basis!

I think that you can do any kind of table with random information using a Generic annotation family with instance parameters and a note block table to filter and sort those parameters.

that way you can do any table you desire, without mixing up project parameters with this table's random parameters.

i.e i have done a consultant address book table which is fully parameterical but also completely autonomous with its own information.

@itzalonI'm not sure I follow. Could you attach a sample or a screenshot?

I think scalability is the issue in the annotation symbol method. Sure if you have one table you want to make it could work, and I've used this method as a hack fro client title-block requirements, but it's not very agile. You would need a parameter for every single cell, plus visibility states out the wazoo.

I've flipped my original concerns. I think the need for a table editor is worthwhile. How else could I more effectively schedule/list duct or pipe construction requirements?

The issue is NOT to use some crazy work-around to get a blank table into Revit.  There's plenty of those that allow information to be put into un-scheduled categories or the generic annotation one you said.

The point is to allow us to create them legitimately and fully customize-able so that we can show what we want how we want it without trying to fight against Revit's internal "Rules".

I understand the need, and it is a work around, but this, next to some other issues i have to work-around in revit - is kinda an easy and logical workaround.

not that crazy as i see it..

@sarsenault2CCSS : im sorry ive made screenshots but cant seem to add them to this post.. dunno why and i gotta go. i will either try again later or send me a pm and i send them to you directly later on.

Couldn’t agree more with the posts above, the idea forum is a total sham and just another way to fob off customers.

I agree this should be basic functionality.

FWIW, my office uses Ideate 'Sticky' for this, and it works great: just maintain a link to a little excel table.

A feature similar to what AutoCAD currently has where you can place a table with a certain number of rows and columns and edit each cell. This would be incredibly useful for creating an Index of Drawings without having to use and manipulate Revit schedules. It is also frequently helpful to have tables on drawings for details with varying dimensions. Being able to easily create a table with editable cells and the ability to merge cells to create title cells would vastly improve my current workflow of creating the table in AutoCAD and then linking the file in. An alternate to this would be to allow us to modify a linked table from AutoCAD in Revit.

Tables within standard text box... Start new text command; Type `+` to start the table and then `-+` for each column. So `+-+-+`, creates a table with two columns. Add `-` for wider columns e.g. `+------+-------+` Zoom in and you can adjust the column lines. Tested on 2019, and 18. Credit> Ehsan Iran-Nejad

@benhagerman Do you mean using one of his pyRevit tools? or are you talking ASCII art? LOL

No, Its a glitch in the text editor that Ehsan found. Autodesk carried the text editor forward from previous developer and it came with a few glitches. This one is accomplished by simply typing the characters +--+--+.... to create simple tables. It is very clunky and I cant get it implement correctly, but it does exist and answers the idea for a 'simple table'

It is an "okay" workaround, but definitely not adequate. I want to click Annotations>>Table, choose how many columns and rows and have full flexibility on resizing, font and line styles. Similar to Word and AutoCAD!

Exactly!!! I do not want a workaround, I want exactly what Autocad has. There is absolutely no reason that Revit should not have this feature by now. I would love it if when you went into a "drafting view" that the ribbon would change and look like Autocad. Trying to do an actual one-line diagram or piping schematic in a drafting view is awful.

@benhagerman Now I see it. It wasn't working in 2018.3 on a Windows 7 box, but I see it in 2018.3 and 2019.2 on Windows 10 (not sure if it's the OS, or some other difference between the two). It also seems like I'm not the only one who sees inconsistency/unreliability - I found his original post: https://twitter.com/eirannejad/status/1119373458620608513 and it doesn't seem to work for everybody. An interesting oddity, but definitely nothing I would depend on in production.

There are times when a smart schedule is overkill, or when something conceptual needs to be worked out. Having a simple table would be useful.

An option like in the most common used spreadsheet programm "calculate with showen values" (aka sum of rounded values vs rounded sum which differs to the mathematically calculated values) would be a well apreciated "feature". There is already another post about that.

@steinerIf there's already a post, please include a link to it - otherwise, cross posting to drum up votes is less effective. 🙂

@lionel.kai

Sorry, I was a little bit confused when I wrote and thought I read a post about it. Actually I did  a little research and didn't find what I supposed. Nevertheless there is this post https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/revit-architecture-forum/schedule-rounding-to-nearest-10-increment/m-....

And sometime ago when I had to investigate the topic I found several places in autodesk pages where the problem is discussed:

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/revit-bim-360-deutsch/rundungsproblem-raumbuch-flachenbuch-gebaudebuc...

- In this extension for Revit there is the option "Use Rounded Values for Total":

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/de/support/revit-products/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2019...

So I don't think there is actualy a post in Revit ideas about that specific point.
